If you are visiting the
Nelson Bay region on holidays, then you may wish to pick up a few supplies from the supermarket to keep in your hotel room, caravan or tent - for when you get the nibbles. It can be expensive to buy all your meals and snacks at cafes - particularly if you have kids that want to snack all day! There are also a number of
free BBQs around the local bays and beaches (and in the
holiday parks if you're staying in one), so it is quick to pick up some meat from the supermarket or local butcher, and cook yourself up a family feast.
Here is a quick list of where you can pick up some supplies on your holidays - in each area where you may be staying...

Stock up on some healthy supplies!
SALAMANDER BAY SQUARE SHOPPING CENTRE
This
shopping centre is the hub of the area, with both
Woolworths and
Coles located inside. Both offer bakery, fresh meat, vegetables and aisles of groceries. They also have pick up and delivery services, which you can book online. At the time of writing, there is an
ALDI store inside the centre, however, this is soon to be moving outside the shopping centre (opposite Macdonalds), as a brand new
standalone store. Whilst in the centre, also check out
Hodges Butchers for all your BBQ needs.
NELSON BAY
In the Nelson Bay town centre, there is a large
Woolworths store
which opened in 2016, much to the delight of locals! This large store has free parking underneath the building - find the ramp entrance on
Stockton Street. While you're in the town centre, also have a look at
Guy's Choice Cuts on Magnus Street for a wide range of meat cuts, for your BBQ by the beach.

SHOAL BAY
This small town has an
IGA X-Press right in the middle of the shops, across the road from the beach. This handy shop is perfect to pick up a few supplies for your hotel room or cabin, particularly if you are staying at
Shoal Bay Holiday Park.
FINGAL BAY
The area of Fingal Bay has a small
Friendly Grocer located in
Market Street, which is one block back from the beach at the northern end. It is part of a small set of shops which has the Fingal Bay petrol station and
Cellar Cafe. This IGA store is popular with locals and tourists to the
Fingal Bay Holiday Park, as it is a one-stop-shop for all your needs.

SOLDIERS POINT/ OLD SALAMANDER BAY SHOPS
There is a set of shops on the way to Soldiers Point that is known to the locals as Old Salamander Bay Shops, Salamander Village or Wanda Beach Shops. It has everything you need with a
local butcher,
bakery and an
IGA Friendly Grocer - which looks small from the front, but it has 3 small aisles, fresh fruit and vegetables and a large fridge/ freezer section across the back of the store.
ANNA BAY
Anna Bay shops, near Birubi Beach, has a
SPAR supermarket for the locals and tourists. Also pick up your BBQ supplies from
Anna Bay Wholesale Meats - you can't beat their steaks!
Although it is always enjoyable to eat out when you are on holidays, sometimes you can't beat picking up a range of cheeses and crackers and having a DIY cheese platter on your hotel verandah, after a day at the beach...sounds good to me!
