Looking for something a bit different, maybe a bit 'out there' to do this weekend? In case you hadn't already heard (and no doubt fans of the above will have), the 10th annual Supanova Pop Culture Expo is on this weekend, 14-15 April 2012. Located at the Melbourne Showgrounds in Flemington, the event is a smorgasbord of special guest appearances, master classes, special screenings, and games revolving around the pop culture topics of anime, science fiction, fantasy, cult, gaming and more.
Younger fans will recognise special guests like Peter Facinelli ('Carlisle Cullen' in the Twilight series), Oliver and James Phelps ('Fred and George Weasley' from the Harry Potter films), and Alison Croggon (author of the 'Books of Pellinor'). Big tip: kids under 12 get in free if accompanied by a paying adult.
Those of more, ahem, advanced age like me will be thrilled to see names like Alan Dean Foster (prolific novelist of movies such as 'Alien' and 'Star Wars'), Edward James Olmos ('Bladerunner'), Wil Wheaton ('Stand By Me', 'Star Trek: The Next Generation', and of course 'The Big Bang Theory'), and Jim Kelly ('Williams' in the cult Bruce Lee film 'Enter the Dragon').
And that's just the tip of the iceberg. If you haven't got any plans for this weekend, get down there! If you do have plans, cancel them and get down there!
Tix? Day pass: $30 at the door Weekend pass: $55 at the door Kids under 12 get in free, but bring ID if your child looks big for their age (ie. No cheating!) Note that the day pass covers most of the expo, but some guests may charge extra fees for autographs and photos. More information here: www.supanova.com.au/tickets/
How to get there Public transport is the big recommendation, with extra trams (Route 57A) and trains (Flemington Racecourse line, to Melbourne Showgrounds) running from the city. More information: www.supanova.com.au/show-information/melbourne/
