The waters of Port Stephens are particularly clear with bright white sand underneath, so it makes you feel like you are gliding through the waters of the Whitsunday Islands. Shoal Bay is an ideal place to kayak and SUP, as the water around the bay is less than 10 metres deep and often just 3-5 metres in some areas - so you can look down and see the water grasses and range of fish underneath your board. Port Stephens also has its own Bottlenose Dolphin population, so you may meet some of these friendly locals as you cruise around. The good part about paddling in the bay is that it rarely has any kind of current, so you can easily paddle along without too much effort (wind permitting!).

Another alternative **is to catch the ferry from Nelson Bay over to Hawks Nest and hire a kayak or SUP over on the other side from Ezy Kayaks or Lazy Paddles , which are both located a short walk from the ferry.
