Sick of those cheap $2 miniature merry-go-rounds at the local shopping centre that only keep the kids entertained for a minute or two? Sunshine Watercraft may be just what you've been waiting for.

Located on the pontoon in the centre of Sunshine Plaza , in Maroochydore, Sunshine Watercraft is not what you would expect to find inside a shopping centre. They take advantage of the Plaza's position, over Cornmeal Creek, to offer an exciting adventure.

Sunshine Watercraft offers a selection of modern watercraft including paddleboats, waterbikes, kayaks and water balls. No need to book either, just show up whenever you're ready. These guys cater for all ages, levels of fitness and experience. They also suit various-sized groups.

The paddleboats can sit two or four, and come with free sunscreen, fish food and life jackets. At only $6 per person for up to 20 minutes, it's a great way to kill time while the parents enjoy a quiet cup of coffee. Surprisingly, there is a lot to see on the water level – even a miniature waterfall that you're free to paddle under if you need to cool down. Feeding the fish is also a blast, it's insane the flurry they get into just to get a nibble.

Don't go too far on them though – you're only allowed about 100 metres from the pontoon. I've seen those stray from the designated area chased down by concerned staff in a tinny. It can look a bit embarrassing for them.

The water balls are a whole new level of fun. While $8 for six minutes may seem a bit dear, but you'll soon find it's more than enough time to tire yourself out. Trying to stand up and maintain your position inside is quite the challenge. The more you thrash around, the harder it is. It's also quite the crowd pleaser – many shoppers will stop and watch on. Don't be afraid to just lie down and feel the cool water beneath you as you catch your breath.

Be warned though, this one really isn't for the faint of heart. On a hot and humid day it can feel quite stuffy in there and you may build up a bit of a sweat. It can also get noisy, as the sound is amplified inside the ball. I recommend saving it for the very end of your shopping day and have a bottle of water ready for your exit.

If you want to spend a bit more time exploring the rest of the river, consider renting a kayak for a couple of hours. Fishing equipment is available for hire and once again, free sunscreen and life jackets are provided.

If you like what you see, consider hiring them for your child's birthday party in the future .

Sunshine Watercraft is a great addition to your shopping experience at the Sunshine Plaza, especially if you need a cheap way to get the kids off your back for 20 minutes.
