What an awesome achievement and sense of pride for little people when they learn to ride a bike or scooter for the very first time and how lucky are we on the Sunshine Coast to have a variety of family-friendly parks to get little legs peddling and on their way!

The Sunshine Coast's educational bike tracks offer a fun way for children to gain important skills as well as help to build the necessary self-confidence on two wheels. The Council has created a compilation of some of the region's favourite learn-to-ride parks - a wheelie awesome idea to keep little ones active and outdoors.

GRAHAME STEWART PARK
LOCATION: Corner of Croydon Avenue and Ilya Street, Currimundi (the main entrance is on Ilya Street)
AMENITIES: picnic tables, shelters with barbecues, drinking fountain, toilets, separate dog off-leash area outside the fenced playground area

Grahame Stewart Park in Currimundi is one of the Sunshine Coast's premier all-abilities, all-inclusive parks. A firm family favourite, Grahame Stewart Park has a very impressive learn-to-ride track, complete with miniature street signs, crossings, weave poles, painted road lines and even a bridge.

This very popular educational bike and scooter track is ideal for beginners as well as older children looking to boost riding confidence.

A perfect spot for family get-togethers, children's birthday parties or just an afternoon to get away from it all, Grahame Stewart Park has everything on offer - picnic spots, two playgrounds, a multi-purpose court, a flying fox, open grassed area plus a fabulous Vegie Garden Story Seat . In 2018 I visited all ten parks that were showcasing the Story Seats but have discovered that over time the Story Seats have all evolved into new stories. Please follow this highlighted link and follow 'Story Seat Map' for the map of new stories.

KEVIN ASMUS PARK
LOCATION: 20 Nanyima Street, Buddina
AMENITIES: picnic tables, drinking fountain and shelter. Toilets are located at the nearby community centre/library area (opening hours may be applicable)

The treasured Kevin Asmus Park in Buddina has a delightful learn-to-ride track that is perfect for young bike, trike or scooter enthusiasts.

Encouraging imaginative play, the Kevin Asmus Park is interwoven with a large educational bike track, allowing children to actively participate in the many different play elements including cafe/shop and play petrol pump. Complete with miniature street signs, roundabouts and painted road lines, one can understand the appeal this park has to young families.

Riding along the paths, children can also stop off at the swings, the pirate ship and the half-basketball court.

Kevin Asmus Park is connected to the Kawana Library, the community centre and the thriving community garden.

LITTLE MOUNTAIN COMMON PARK
LOCATION: Raintree Boulevard, Little Mountain
AMENITIES: picnic tables, barbecues, drinking fountains, shelters and toilets

Set under the shade of large trees, the Little Mountain Common Park educational track offers a fun and meandering adventure to learners and children looking to boost their abilities. This quaint track comes complete with miniature street signs, speed bumps, roundabouts and painted road lines.

Stay a little longer to enjoy the multiple playgrounds and the large fenced-off-leash dog park.

SKIPPY PARK, LANDSBOROUGH
LOCATION:. 321/335 Old Landsborough Road, Landsborough
AMENITIES: picnic tables, barbecues, drinking fountain and toilets

Skippy Park is aptly named for the kangaroos that regularly visit this area, so look out for our furry fauna bounding along.

The purpose-built cycle circuit/criterium at Skippy Park in Landsborough is ideal for children of all ages, learners and experienced bike and scooter riders. The cycle track is on a level bitumen path, positioned around a green oval and playground area, set against a backdrop of native bush.

Experienced cyclists will love this circuit for fine-tuning their skills and speed on the curves, whilst the littlies' will love the confidence boost it gives them when being able to cycle safely on a big wide track.

Once the children have tired of cycling - as if - they can play ball on the oval or head to the playground.

Skills and simple rules to follow when learning to ride:
  • everyone should keep left and give way to pedestrians
  • warn when approaching – cyclists use a bell (or in my case, I call out 'tring, tring, I can never quite find the bell on time) and skateboarders should call out too
  • try not to obstruct the path
  • stop and look before leaving the path crossing the road

  • Keep the little ones in the family active and safe by visiting one or more of the Sunshine Coast's best family-friendly bike parks. They will wheelie love the experience.
