After the third Sunshine Coast Open House was launched on September 9, the countdown began. Although the signature event is being held over the full weekend of October 19 and 20, with thirty "houses" to explore, it will be the well planned who will make the most of the weekend's opportunities. Here is your step by step guide to avoid missing out on the region's heritage, public spaces, green star projects, beach houses and places seldom seen within the rich tapestry of the Sunshine Coast.

The first step is to peruse the list of buildings open for inspection and choose the ones that most interest you. In your planning, note the date, Wednesday, October 9, when bookings open for 12 of the 30 sites available. Go to www.sunshinecoastopenhouse.com.au to book, having taken note of opening times and days. Last year, many were disappointed when they left their gallop too late to book buildings in which they were particularly interested.

More site information is available at www.sunshinecoastopenhouse.com.au and live updates will be available on
Facebook-Sunshine Coast Open House, Instagram@SunshineCoastOpenHouse and Twitter@SunshineCoastOH.

Be prepared to wait at some of the more popular venues. Hat, sunscreen, water and snacks will ensure a comfortable waiting time and take advantage of chatting with like-minded folk in the queues.

Don't forget the photography competition being run in conjunction with the weekend. Look for the unusual angle and upload your photos to www.sunshinecoastopenhouse.com.au by October 23rd. Practise your skill by posting your shots to #SCOH19 and #sunshine Coast Open House as you move from house to house.

The Open House Worldwide network began in London more than 25 years ago and over 40 cities now participate annually. This event allows you to meet the people who design, build and preserve these buildings which makes the Open House experience so much broader than simply taking a sticky beak into other people's surrounds. To further broaden the experience, open forums are also an integral part of the event.

This year's Open Forum, to be held at the University of the Sunshine Coast Innovation Centre on Friday October 18 at 6pm is Designing for Multi-generational Living, Current social and economic circumstances are seeing a return to days of yore when a number of different generations lived under the one roof. Many a household has seen adult children return to the nest and ageing Baby Boomers often come in handy as live-in babysitters for two-income households. Problems and possible architectural solutions will be discussed by professionals such as architects and urban planners. Book your place at www.sunshinecoastopenhouse.com.au.

Thanks to a number of renowned Sunshine Coast architects and informed volunteers, your knowledge of the built environment will be broadened through their special guided tours. If you wish to be part of the volunteer retinue, go to www.sunshineopenhouse.com.au. You will be rewarded with the ability to jump queues and a limited edition SCOH tote bag designed by Sunshine Coast artist, Susan Schmidt, whose studio is open throughout SCOH from 9am to 4pm.

Nothing like being able to combine your fitness program with your love of the history of the built environment. Walking tours will be conducted over the weekend, but again, get in quickly with your bookings. Only one of several available is self-guided. Pick up the paper guide to the latter from your local Sunshine Coast Visitor Information Centre,

Sunshine Coast Open House, the event that keeps on giving: The Built Heritage Symposium will help your understanding of the research that goes behind uncovering the history of the built environment. Experts from Queensland universities, the Queensland State Archives, heritage experts and historians will discuss the physical evidence of our cultural development. Enjoy some local stories with a complimentary morning tea and light lunch. Bookings are essential, so to reserve your seat Phone 07 5420 8600 and give info on your dietary needs. This symposium will be held at the Mary Grigor Centre in the grounds of Bankfoot House in the Glasshouse Mountains on Friday November 1st from 10am to 2pm.
