Discover the built environment of the Sunshine Coast
So you think that the Sunshine Coast is all sun, sea, surf and ... um, scenery. Well, the program for Sunshine Coast Open House 2018 will soon disabuse you of that notion. Who would believe it has far more to offer? On Saturday 20th October, you will be able to appreciate another side to its sunny story a variety of architectural, heritage and scientific achievements. For one day you will have free access to a snapshot of the evolution of Sunshine Coast architecture, with some buildings dating back to the late 1800s, through to some award-winning cutting-edge designs of recent years.

With a program of 30 buildings stretching from Caloundra, Maroochydore and Nambour to the Hinterland, Peregian, Noosa and Pomona, you will need to be extremely organised. I guarantee you will be spoiled for choice and will come nowhere near covering all offerings. Here is my plan for the Pomona precinct. I suggest you visit www.sunshinecoastopen to make your own convenient plan.

Sunshine Coast Open House 2018, Majestic Theatre, Pomona
The Inside Story

Built in 1921, Pomona's Majestic Theatre holds a world record. It is the longest continuously operating silent film theatre. A screening will be held from 12-12.30pm. There are now very few pre-World War II picture theatres operating in Queensland, and this is an opportunity to self-guide yourself through its Main Hall, Stage, Foyer and Dining Room. Built in 1921, it was refurbished in 2006-2007, and is still undergoing various restoration stages including the installation later this year of a rare Compton Organ. Some of the furnishings include a few salvaged from long lost and bemoaned theatres such as Brisbane's Regent.

You will find this heritage listed gem at 3 Factory Street, Pomona. It is open from 10am -2pm and no bookings are required. Come and admire the little multi-purpose country hall that could. Be prepared by visiting its website

Sunshine Coast Open House 2018, Fire and Rescue Station Pomona
Ready to Rescue

With the recent spate of bushfires sweeping the country, here is a chance to go behind the scenes of a headquarters of our brave firemen. The current state of the art Pomona Fire and Rescue Station was built in 2015, replacing the original commissioned in 1956. It is manned 24 hours a day and was designed to fit in with the heritage character of the town and adjacent heritage buildings. The fireys are equipped and trained to attend a variety of incidents including road crashes, grass and wildfires, as well as structure fires in many local and rural communities.

No bookings are required to explore this Queensland Fire and Emergency Services facility at 9 Reserve Street, Pomona. There will be rolling guided tours between 10am and 2pm.

Pomona Railway Station was active from 1891 to 1991 as part of the Cooran to Cooroy line. The disused station had a new lease on life when the Pomona Chamber of Commerce convinced Queensland Rail to donate the buildings to the community. Voluntary labour resulted in the buildings being moved on to Council land in 2000 and they became Pomona's well known and much visited Art Gallery and Visitors Information Centre.
Take a self-guided tour of an array of several buildings of historical value at 10 Station Street, Pomona between 10 and 2pm. Visit

Sunshine Coast open House 2018, lighthouses old and new, Caloundra
Lighthouses old and new

What is a coastal scene without its lighthouses? SCOH 2018 is blessed with two to explore in Caloundra, examples of maritime safety technology old and new.

It is wonderful to see heritage buildings such as the Mapleton Men's Shed, formerly Forestry buildings, brought back to a new life as a place where men can enjoy the camaraderie of like-minded handymen.

There is more to Sunshine Coast Open House 2018 than stickybeaking. This community activity begins with a panel discussion, Architecture for Good an exploration of architectural work for community good, on Saturday October 6 from 3.30 to 5pm at the Sunshine Coast Health Institute, 6 Doherty Street, Birtinya. There is an exhibition, talks and workshops from Friday October 5 to Sunday November 4 at the Old Ambulance Station, 80 Howard Street, Nambour.

Those who enjoy a walk and talk are not forgotten. There are Sunshine Coast tours where you will discover special places and stories of the Sunshine Coast's early pioneers. Pre-book these free tours on the website.

As you wander from open door to open door, the photography buffs amongst you may capture some artistic shots that catch your eye. There are cash prizes in both the Open and Student categories of the photography competition. Look out for those emphasizing exterior, detailed, interior and people shots.
