Sunshine Café & Lunch Bar in Mount Lawley appears to be your typical local burger joint but it isn't, instead serving some mighty fine Vietnamese food.

While tradies queue for pies and sausage rolls, those in the know order fresh-made pho (soup) which comes with lemon, Asian basil, chilli, and bean shoots which you can add to taste.

The 'Tai' pho – one of 10 soup options - comes in a super-sized bowl brimming with broth, some lean beef thinly sliced, onion, and a substantial quantity of rice noodles. It's a delicious and low-fat meal for $10.50.

If you're super-hungry, another good option are the Vietnamese baguettes ($6) which come filled with pate, meat, mayonnaise, carrots, and herbs such as coriander. Chilli is an optional extra. Known as Banh Mi , the bread rolls reflect Vietnam's history as a French colony.

The rice paper rolls cost $6 for a pack of three – chicken, prawn or vegetarian – and come with hoisin sauce.

The staff at this local cafe are always friendly and helpful, making up fresh rice paper rolls if they have run out of those already packed. They're also hard-working, offering their services as caterers on Sundays, when the cafe is shut.

In addition to its Vietnamese offerings, Sunshine also has hamburgers, conventional sandwiches, doner kebabs, chips, and pies. I have not tried any of these – it's just too hard to go past the Vietnamese food.
