Sunset Park is an expansive outdoor area where Ashgrove meets The Gap. With a distance spanning 0.82 kilometres, the park is set against the majestic Enoggera Hill and can be entered off Waterworks Road and via Monoplane Street (just past Mater Dei school). A convenient but small circular free park is available at the entrance to the park.
A centrepiece of the park is an off-leash dog park which is one of Brisbane's biggest and is accessed via a slighted inclined, shared walking path. Once inside, pups can test their skills on the agility equipment of tunnels and jumps or simply run and retrieve for what seems like miles.
Dogs can go off leash
While the dogs are burning off energy, their owners can watch on in the covered picnic shelter with a bench/table, or under a tree shaded bench seat. On the day of my visit, the pre summer sun and limited rain meant that much of the grass had been worn (or maybe it was just from athletic dogs who had run amuck). Still, it didn't seem to bother pooch and take away from this fun day out.
It seems that the pooches at Sunset Park are a social bunch and fury visitors are invited to attend its annual Christmas Party on 11 December 2016 at 4pm. What's a Christmas party without an owner and pup Christmas costume competition, doggy themed lucky gate prizes and a lucky dip. Count me in.
BMX Bandits Across from the dog park is a free BMX (bicycle motocross) facility with mounds of dirt jumps for the kids to try. And if a coffee and pastries are what you need after all that fun, Banneton Bakery is waiting at the start of Monoplane Street.
