Not far from the famous Gregory North Hotel Winton , is a sign noting "Boulder Opal". With another sign stating "free entry to cutting area", we decided to have a sticky beak inside this small store. As soon as we stepped inside, we could hear a bubbly voice welcome us.

This humble little store was full of sparkling jewellery made from opal. Twenty years ago, Winton, in the central west of Queensland, had 272 different opal mining operations within a hundred-mile radius from Winton town centre. Today, there are only about twenty operators left but opal is still a good business attracting many visitors to Winton. This family-run opal shop is owned by Graham Graeme, the opal miner himself.

At the back corner of the shop, you can find an impressively large boulder opal alongside the tools that Graeme used to cut and polish the raw opal.

A huge variety of opal jewellery, such as opal earrings, necklaces, bracelets and other opal made jewellery can be found here with prices based on opal quality and sizes. You can also buy loose opal, opal inspired gifts and other unusual rocks from Winton or surrounding area. also sells some bric-a-brac that related to the town of Winton such as postcards.
