Get in the Aussie spirit with Claremont's Sunset Cinema series this Summer!

Sunset Cinema is presenting the best of contemporary Australian cinema from Friday 27th to Sunday 29th January 2017.

Over three nights, you can sit back and view critically-acclaimed Australian films under the stars for FREE.

Town of Claremont Mayor Jock Barker said this year's Australian theme was fitting, with the cinema series taking place the same week as Australia Day celebrations.

"This year's theme is close to our hearts with a selection of popular Australian titles – Lantana, Two Hands and Rabbit Proof Fence," Mr Barker said.

"With the movie screening commencing at 7.30pm, Sunset Cinema is an opportunity to kick back under the stars and enjoy the company of our fellow community members."

Event-goers can also enjoy Australian-themed food and browse the art installation of Australian landscapes by renowned artist Jules Sher from 6pm.

The film screenings will commence after sunset (from 7.30pm).

The line-up includes:

  • Friday 27th January: Two Hands (1999)

Jimmy (Heath Ledger) finds himself indebted to a local gangster (Bryan Brown) when some cash disappears and he is on the run from thugs. Meanwhile two street kids start a shopping spree when they find the missing money. Co-starring Rose Byrne as Alex, a country girl who becomes Jimmy's love interest.

  • Saturday 28th January: Lantana (2001)

The relationships of four couples unravel after the discovery of a young woman's body in Lantana bush in suburban Sydney. Starring Anthony LaPaglia, Kerry Armstrong, Geoffrey Rush and Rachel Blake.

  • Sunday 29th January: Rabbit Proof Fence (2002)

Three mixed-race Aboriginal girls escape the Moore River Native Settlement after being placed there in 1931 for re-education. The girls walk 2,400km for nine weeks along the rabbit proof fence to return to their community at Jigalong, while being pursued by white law enforcement authorities and an Aboriginal tracker. This Australian drama is based on a true story as told in Doris Pilkington Garimara's book Follow the Rabbit-Proof Fence. Starring Everlyn Sampi, Tianna Sansbury, Kenneth Branagh and David Gulpilil.

This event is for all ages, but please check the movie ratings for children under 15 years.
