Sunnytown is a distinctly Queensland story that charts a surreal journey through a young girl's subconscious exploring the consequences each of the family members face when confronted with the realities they've been denying. It delves into the fragilities and complexities of family conflict from an adolescent girl's point of view.
The central character, Danika (Dani) Hart, glimmers from one world to the next, wherever her head is too full.
Dani's family is helping her celebrate her 13th birthday. However, on the big day, Dani is overwhelmed by an exploding cake and a glimmering episode that takes her to a world too close to home to be an escape, and too far away to be safe. Luckily, Dani's best friend Miranda, who is able to pull her back to reality is there. But when someone threatens to take Miranda from her, Dani finds herself facing the harsh lights of the
Sunnytown Municipal Extravaganza Mall from where Miranda may not be able to bring her back.
Sunnytown is an inherently gripping and unsettling piece of writing. Created by some of Brisbane's leading theatre-makers this dark and beguiling production is being brought to life through a splendid cast of Brisbane actors including,
Caroline Dunphy, Ron Kelly, Olivia Halti-Smith and
Vanessa Krummenacher.
