Going for a drive can sometimes bring surprises you least expect. That's exactly what happened to me when I decided to travel down a road I pass on the way to work, always wondering where it went. Surprise! surprise! I came across one of Brisbane's newest nurseries.

Sunnydene Nursery is located in Sunnydene Road, Chandler or turn off Old Cleveland Road at Tinchborne Street, drive to the end and turn right onto Sunnydene Road. The nursery is 150 metres from the turnoff and is situated on four acres of land with a massive array of potted plants both indoor and outdoor. Owner Maurice and his team have a goal to make Sunnydene Nursery Brisbane's premier nursery for propagating natives from seed along with a full range of Australian Native edibles.

If you have a query about your plants or just want to know the best plants to grow in your area, have a talk to Pete the resident Horticulturist, who is not only passionate about his work at Sunnydene Nursery's, but has a wealth of knowledge and is more than happy to give ideas and tips to help you create your own magnificent garden. Pete is a National Nationally Accredited Horticulturist Trainer/Assessor to Cert III (Cert 5/Diploma) in Horticulture (and related skills), and classes are held at Sunnydene each Friday (weekday).

Natives are not the only genre of plant for sale at Sunnydene – an oasis of potted greenery is seen as far as the eye can go. Large walking pathways between the rows of plants allow you and your plant trolley plenty of access to consider your choices. I was interested in the Daylily and Hippeastrum displays as I am always looking for new varieties and colours to brighten my garden.

Sunnydene Nursery has only been open since January 2018, yet the goals and plans are set in stone with further expansion in the near future. There is a small creek at the lower end of the property where a bridge is soon to be erected. This bridge will take you over to another patch of ground where you will see many well-known and not so well-known plants growing. This area will give you a better understanding of what plants grow best in the area and what plants thrive with one another. The area will also have outdoor tables and chairs for the enjoyment of all. At present a shipping container is the office where you will pay for your goods, however, the friendly service I received on both occasions I visited, far outweighs the wait for the eventual construction of a bigger building.

In the interim, you will not find anywhere else a better range of indoor and outdoor plants at reasonable prices. Sunnydene Nursery is the place to go when you are not quite sure what to give someone for a present or a gift for the person with everything. A new range of fibreglass pots manufactured specifically for Sunnydene has arrived along with an array of outdoor ornaments. Opening hours are Tuesday to Sunday from 9.00am to 4.00pm.
