Venture outside the Valley this year and experience Chinese New Year in Sunnybank, Brisbane's unofficial Chinatown. Sunnybank, a multicultural community with a large Asian population, will host a number of festive events to welcome the Year of the Snake.

Sunnybank Plaza (corner of Mains Road and McCullough Street) will celebrate with a Carnival Day on Sunday, February 3 from 9am until 8pm. Entertainment includes lion dances, traditional music, magic shows, and much more. Entry to the festival is free. Click here for more details.

Foodies will enjoy a Sunnybank Plaza Food Tour with Tony Ching, an accomplished chef and owner of Grass Tree Kitchen Cooking School. During the three hour tour of Sunnybank's food precinct, Tony will show you where to eat and shop in Sunnybank. Each tour ends with an authentic Asian meal; either yum cha at the legendary Landmark Restaurant or a progressive dinner visiting several Sunnybank restaurants. The cost is $68 per person. Special Chinese New Year tours are available morning and afternoon, from Thursday, February 7 to Saturday, February 9. Call Sunnybank Plaza on 3345 7500 to book.

Sunnybank Community and Sports Club (470 McCullough Street) will welcome the Year of the Snake with a week of free activities and performances, including a feng shui seminar, fortune telling, folk dancing, Chinese cooking demonstrations, and lion dances. Bookings are essential for these free events. The Club's restaurant will also offer an extensive range of Chinese meals during the week, from February 4 to February 10.

From February 13 to February 23, Sunnybank Hills Library (corner of Compton and Calam Roads) will host free activities and performances to celebrate the Chinese New Year. Enjoy erhu (Chinese violin) recitals, traditional dancing, tai chi demonstrations, and lion dances. Children will be entertained with traditional Chinese crafts.
