Spirit & liqueur lovers, you'll be in good spirits here! Sunny Hill Distillery is the first of its kind on the Yorke Peninsula. Originally established as a wheat farm in the 1870s, this family farm now operates as a distillery, where their own farm-grown crops are turned into award-winning spirits right onsite. The wheat and grain grown on Sunny Hill Farm is used for vodka production, which then forms the base spirit for their own unique range of gins and liqueurs.
Sunny Hill is located near the top of the Peninsula, approximately 20km north of Maitland and just 3 minutes outside the tiny township of Arthurton. As you arrive, you'll see a handful of large sheds, where the main entrance has a couple of colourful murals painted.
As you step inside the tasting room, you'll find a relaxed and stylish space with plenty of seating – you have the choice of rich leather couches, tall bar tables and stools, or perhaps sit outside on the open deck overlooking brilliant green lawns perfect for the kids to play or have a picnic in the sun. From here, you get sweeping views of the very fields where the grain has been transformed into the delicious spirits in your glass.
For those interested in the distilling process, one wall of the tasting room has been cleverly designed in graphic blackboard-style showing the 'Crop to Drop' distilling steps – right next to glass doors looking into the distillery shed where you can see the experts and equipment in action. For a fee, you can take a guided tour through the production floor to learn about the process.
Tastings are the main event – you can work your way through their range of spirits, which includes wheat vodka, pink gin and classic dry gin, served with ice and tonic or soda water. For liqueur lovers, you can tease your tastebuds with chocolate & coffee liqueurs and limoncello, all served on ice like miniature cocktails. Almost all of these spirits have won prestigious national & international awards in the past year.
With a fully stocked bar, they also offer a huge range of cocktails, mocktails, soft drinks and other beverages including SA beer, wine and cider. Later in 2021, they will also have their own new batches of whisky and rum ready to serve. Light snacks are available including share platters, chips, cheese, dip and crackers, or you can BYO picnic. Dogs are welcome too.
Sunny Hill Distillery focuses on a few measures for local and sustainable production:
* All grain is grown onsite and turned into their own spirits;
* The malting process for whisky & rum is assisted by another South Australian business in the Barossa;
* Cold-drip coffee for the liqueur is supplied by a local Yorke Peninsula business;
* Collection of rainwater for production;
* Solar energy on the property;
* Liquid waste from production is treated onsite and spent grain is given to a local pig farm.
