Looking for a new Sunday brunch venue?
Hotel South Melbourne is offering a delicious
Sundays in Italy menu to celebrate the
Formula 1 Rolex Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne . On our visit, we sampled the special Italian menu which will please most palates, whether you follow
Ferrari or
McLaren.
Our first starter was the housemade potato gnocchi, lightly fried, topped with fine crumb with a light honey-pumpkin sauce and the gentle crunch of toasted walnut and wilted sage, sprinkled with fresh parmigiana. Delicious! These soft little pillows just melt in your mouth and were the star of the menu.
We followed this starter with the lasagne arancini, which come in a serve of three, heartily satisfying for a quick light snack with Napoli sauce served on the side. The arancini were nice and crunchy on the outside, and lovely and moist inside with a cheese and beef mix. Personally, I wanted more tomato and bechamel flavours with a hint of spice. For mild palates and children these are perfect, but for an experienced palate, pass the passata please!
No
Sundays in Italy menu would be complete without a variety of spritzers and cocktails. We sampled the 'Spagliato' which featured
Campari and Davidson Plum for those who like peppery blood orange notes, and the 'Limoncello and Love' for those with a sweeter palate.
We also enjoyed the 'Il signore Hugo' which featured elderflower notes for a refreshing spritz. 'Aperol Spritzers' are also on the menu and there are a wide variety of
Golden Hills Brewery ciders, lagers and ales, and an extensive wine menu for the curious.
For our main course, we ordered the pork and fennel sausage pizza topped with smoked mozzarella and broccolini – Magnifico! Smoked mozzarella, was the jewel of this dish. The serving was generous for two hungry people and the pork and fennel sausage was mild and steamed – not oily or overpowering – a great bite! We sampled the
Golden Hills Brewery Blood Plum Feijoa Sour which was light, mildly tangy and a perfect accompaniment to the pizza. Bravo!
Located in a prime location on the corner of Market and Clarendon Streets, with the number 12 tram outside the door,
Hotel South Melbourne should be on your list for your next catch up with friends or family, Sunday brunch or party. The regular menu has an array of gastronomic delights and fresh seafood features prominently.
Golden Hills Brewery have completely renovated the building to reveal the original brick walls and beams furnished with quality wooden furnishings and parquetry floors. The former disco days of
The Market and
The Star are a distant memory. It's a family-friendly venue with a fully accessible downstairs dining area suitable for prams and walkers.
Hotel South Melbourne is set to be the Dame of South Melbourne this season, with an impressive array of natural light-filled spaces with the warmth and ambience of a transeasonal venue ready for winter and summer with several bars, and outdoor beer garden and dedicated spaces for an event, business conference or lunch.
Regular pub specials include
Parma Mondays with a beverage of your choice,
Steak Tuesdays featuring porterhouse served with bearnaise sauce, fries and salad and Happy Hour, 4pm to 6pm, Monday to Friday.
I look forward to visiting this grand establishment again soon, and I hope it is at the top of your list, whether you are a local, or a 'blown-in'.
