In front of the Arts Centre Melbourne is a delightful Sunday Market that I just stumbled on this weekend. And is it FREE! Many markets this day are being run by groups, where there is an entry fee. But this is still FREE as the air. Just stroll and enjoy the sights, sounds and smells.

There are about 20 stalls of very different and varied Australian handmade and specialty items. It was so wonderful to see them open and busy with passing traffic stopping and browsing and buying.

I had just been to the Soho Restaurant and Bar for a late lunch, after seeing the The Wedding Singer , with my hubby, and found the most beautiful painting. I have a weakness for art and I fell in love.

Well, it is almost my birthday and my husband was very happy to see me pick out something I would so enjoy. He had spotted it as well and thought it was superb. I can advise other husbands that this is the perfect place to stroll with your wife a week or two before her birthday and sneakily watch what she spots for the perfect gift.

The painter, Adan Odeh, has been painting for about 20 years and just as a hobby, but you can see the superb skill as he depicts the beach boxes, seashore and skyline of Melbourne. Bathers and sailboats are delicately scattered around in bright rich colours, summer sunshine, and a vibrant blue sky. I knew exactly where I was going to hang it. But my husband says I have to wait till my birthday. What wait! Aren't we living in a society of instant gratification? Oh well, I guess I am old school. Good things come to those who wait. And it will be well worth the wait.

It wasn't till I arrived home and began to do some research that I realized how special this artwork was. I have since discovered, "Adnan Odeh is an independent palette knife artist currently residing in Melbourne, Australia. His artwork takes you on a journey through the colour and life of the world through his appreciation. By depicting the beauty of colour, landscape and people, Adan's artwork radiates a sense of joy, meaning and tranquillity. The palette knife technique brings about dramatic and amazing colours and textures that attracts, engages and immerse you within each and every one of his artworks. *There is always beauty in that you don't see' " according to his website. He only works with acrylics on canvas and it is a one-off. There are no prints. Every piece is a signed one-off art original. It is yours and yours alone.

His artwork has been exhibited through magazines such as Trends, and in galleries throughout Melbourne, Canberra and Perth with major launches in 2008 and 2009.

There were so many people clustered around the table picking out this stunning art.

Artist Marek Wilinski's wife was also managing a stall selling prints of his artwork. With stunning variety, it would be difficult to choose but let her guide you with her expertise of her husband's exceptional depictions.

There was also a leather maker with handmade purses and belts of stunning quality and vibrant colours of leather. I adore the feel and smell of real leather. Stunning driving caps in burnt oranges and red drew my eye. I might have to get one to match the red grill of my MG. If you want a luxurious laptop bag, head here on Sunday.

The silversmith Vince Story had delicate and extensive necklaces and earrings. There were beautiful Australian fauna and flora and our unique animals. Perfect souvenirs or gifts for overseas.

A jewellery maker paints delicate faces and inlays them into glass or resin medallions. They captured the imagination with their delicate features and sweet faces.

The Wonderous Monkey has two-sided art and necklaces in beautiful stone and silver. Change your jewellery in the middle of the day. Just turn it over. I wonder if they are a special charm.

There was a lovely lady who makes natural products with lavender and the sweet smells floated on the air.

Then, Rebecca was there, selling wooden images on beautiful cards, made with a cutting lath and depicting scenes from Australia and around the world. I could not resist two to send to family in Germany and Greece.

Designer clothes and shawls were a swathe of colour and textures that caught the eye and flowed beautifully.

There were also food stalls with tasty treats. What a way to spend an afternoon. Take the time to park at the Melbourne Botanical Gardens and stroll across the lush grass. You get a lovely walk ending in a lovely shop and a lovely walk back.
