For friendly tenpin bowling head to
Suncity in Mari St just behind Nelson Park. Established 37years ago, one of their original members, a 98 year old, still bowls regularly. Not only do they have enough lanes for anyone to book but they host lots of groups – my photos feature the over 50's. I didn't photograph the school group as I didn't have parental approval. Then there are the seniors, ladies, groovers, sunbirds, boat club, sunseekers, black swans [saw them in the lake out front], juniors, beachcombers, socializers, twilighters, and more.
Staff are friendly, helpful people with both the owner and the manager on hand. Brando who works in their pro shop specializes in making balls just the right weight and fit for you personally – he has orders from all over Australia. Hold on, isn't that Brando the amazing bowler - the one who has scored 300 more than thirty times? Well, they all bowl there.
Did I mention the birthday parties they cater for – I enjoyed many in my early teens at our local blowing alley. And you don't have to clean up afterwards. Friday and Saturday nights are disco nights with lights, games and music to cater for the younger crowd – safe, fun entertainment. Wonky bowlers like me can request rails to be lowered into their gutters for the balls to bounce off so you might actually hit some pins. And they have ramps for the young or challenged to rest the bowl on and roll it down. Everyone is catered for.
Their café is open during their business hours and has a real cappuccino machine and an interesting varied menu. The best part is the spacious verandah overlooking
Nelson Park and the duck lake there. So bowl up or be square.
