The last time I was at Sun City was when I was watching Seve Ballesteros play the Million Dollar Championship. Of course that was a long time ago. So, when I was invited to play a game at Sun City I was, of course, a little stunned. My first thought was that this would probably be a very high priced game, what with flights and accommodation and all? However, to my relief, I found that there was a Sun City Country Club right here in Perth.

Sun City can be found about 45 minutes north of Perth. To get there you can either choose a more coastal route or the more rural route. I decided to take both routes. The first was the more rural down up to Sun City by the Wanneroo road, and the second was a beautiful coastal experience back down Marmion road. Which ever route you take, you can be assured to have an experience travelling there; however I was told at Sun City that the Marmion route show cases the development of Yanchep a little more extensively than the Wanneroo Road. Personally, I liked both.

One of the first stops I make before playing any golf course is their practice facility. I guess it is a way for me to just settle into the swing of things. I have to say that I was really blown away at the standard that Sun City set with their practice range. They really set the bench mark high. The greens were soft enough to hold pitch, yet fast enough to see a true roll. The practice bunker offered a range of lies for all types of players. I could have spent the whole day at the Range alone, but I was eager to see the course and to see the new holes that they were creating.

One of the most memorable holes at Sun City, South Africa, is their 18th hole. It is slight dog leg left with a huge water feature in front of a fairly large green. Sun City , Perth, seemed to have captured this almost to the tee. I knew immediately that Sun City had set its sights on becoming one of the best golf courses in Western Australia.

One of the biggest downfalls Sun City has had to date, has been their summer season. This is mostly due to the past reticulation problems. However, Sun City has remedied this with a new sprinkler system that is sure to see golfers through very lush fairways during the hotter months.

The new greens are bent grass. I can say, for certain, that they are true to their roll. The older greens seem to have a bit of Bermuda grass running through it. These greens are a little harder, with the best approach playing them short to roll up to the pin.

While driving into Sun City, I noticed a number of development homes being built. This was pretty exciting, because I know there is nothing better than living right on the golf course.

I noticed the strategic position of these homes around the course. Of course, as a golfer, my concerns would be homes in reach of a stray ball, especially in reaching distance off the tee. From a golfer's point of view, that is a lost ball, and golf balls cost money. From a home owner's point of view, that could be a broken window, or worse – a concussion. However, the Yanchep Golf Estate had ensured they placed homes that were far enough away from stray balls, but close enough to step out of the home for a little play.

Sun City Country Club has really turned a new leaf. It is beginning to transform into a world class course with the help of US Open winner, Geoff Ogilvy and golf course designer, Michael Clayton. Any golfer that played this course in the past is definitely in for a real awakening. There are holes that play tactically, holes that allow the bigger hitters to let it rip, and holes that reward a good shot to the green. Sun City definitely has a little bit for all golfers, which is why it would make a great destination for your next game. Plus, with a restaurant on site, you can order some amazing food, have an ice cold drink and watch the other golfers finish their round. And the beauty, you don't need to purchase the plane ticket to get there.
