FREE summer evening movies in the parks
Boorondara Council Facebook

I've just come back from an evening walk and I was surprised at all the people in the park. There were packs of girlfriends lolling around on the grass and chatting, dog owners being tugged by pooches and families picnicking.

A walk in the park is great but if you need anther incentive to get you out of the house and into some of our great parks then the City of Boroondara is kindly running free summertime movies.

There are two coming up. The classic Roman Holiday (G) with Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck will be on Saturday 14 December 2013 - at Creswick Street Reserve, Hawthorn.

This is a delightful romp around Rome when Princess Ann (Audrey Hepburn) escapes her royal duties and explores the city on the back of a scooter with Joe Bradley, an attractive escort who doesn't let on that he is actually an American journalist. Romance and comedy soon ensue.

The following Saturday 21 December is the family favourite The Goonies (PG) at the Eglinton Reserve, Eglinton Road, Kew.

This is a 1980s classic about a group of zany kids searching for buried treasure. If your kids haven't seen this film here is the chance to introduce them to the writers Chris Columbus (Home Alone and Gremlins) and Steven Spielberg. Classic stuff.

Both films start just after sunset (approximately 8.45pm) but there will be music playing from 8pm. Even the family dog is welcome but you will need to keep Fido on a short leash.

Bring a blanket to sit on and cushions and rugs aren't a bad idea. Chairs aren't encouraged except for the low beach style ones. If you do need, for some reason, to bring a chair there will be space provided for you at the back.

You might like to pack a picnic hamper and a bottle of wine but there will also be a variety of food and drinks (including hot ones) for sale. Alcohol however will not be for sale.

While it would great if you are close enough to walk to these venues you can also plan your journey using Public Transport Victoria's journey planner

It is so great being outside on a summer evening we should be lapping these events up.
