What do Sammy J and Randy, knitting, samba and Dora the Explorer have in common? The answer is that they are all going to be featured in this year's City of Stirling's Summerset Arts Festival.

Summerset is an annual festival organised by the City of Stirling and it's usually choc-a-block full of events within a relatively short period of time. Most of them are free of charge while some workshops require a ticket purchase (average of $5.50).

The opening act of the festival is Comedy Under the Stars (MA15) which is a free event, featuring among others Sammy J and Randy. Other performers include The Axis of Awesome (their song is one of the most popular YouTube videos of all time), Dave Thornton, as well as other Perth acts. If this is your cup of tea, mark your calendar: Friday 3 February; 7pm-9.30pm; Scarborough Amphitheatre.

The next day, Saturday 4 February is going to be a busy day for the organisers as they have multiple events at hand. In the morning, Book Talk as well as a play by the Venticelli Youth Theatre would be presented at Scarborough Library. Later in the day (and continuing into Sunday), Settler's Cottage Artist Studios will be open to the public for a free event called Art on the Fence. Morning tea will be provided and children will be able to create their own artwork. Still on Saturday but later in the afternoon, a free beginners' workshop in samba is asking you to come and share the sambanista fun at Scarborough Beach Reserve (free of charge and no experience necessary).

On Sunday, 5 February, the highlight for kids would certainly be the Kids Festival (10am-3pm at Jackadder Reserve, Woodlands). Dora the Explorer will make an appearance and who knows, maybe Boots the Monkey will come along too. Later in the afternoon, Mount Flora Museum (Watermans) will come alive with museum tour as well as story-writing workshops.

Tired already? Well, those would not be all. More activities are to be had on the days before as well as after. Although the festival officially starts on the 3 February, some workshop will be conducted as early as 17 January. Go to the festival website to see the complete list of events and how to register for the workshops.

The festival will go out with a bang, with a fireworks display scheduled to end the Beach Closing Concert. This is another free event at the Scarborough Amphitheatre to be conducted on the last day of the festival, which is Saturday 11 February at 6.45pm-9.30pm. The headline act of the concert is the Cat Empire with support acts from local artists.

Although the festival is relatively young (this is its fourth year), the organisers seem to be quite serious in making it a successful community event. Other than providing the jam-packed program, they also try to make it as easy as possible for us to reach them, by providing a website , a facebook page , an iPhone app , as well as public transportation information . As for myself, I have marked my calendar for the first two weeks of February. How about you?
