Intriguing wines and intriguing stories will be part of the make-up of this year's Sunset Wine at Brighton Reserve in Scarborough on Saturday February 18 and Sunday February 19. From a winery started by a WWII bomber pilot to a wine that's now being used to create wine cocktails, there's plenty to learn and taste says event organizer Richard Campbell.

There's a brewer who has only been able to make it to Sunset Wine thanks to a crowd funding scheme to help them replace tanks vital to the brewing process. Or, how about trying a pomegranate cider, a 100 per cent organic wine, or some of the spirits now being made in Western Australia. Throw in a rare opportunity to sit on a grassy swathe and watch the sun sink over the Indian Ocean with a glass of wine and some tasty tapas style food and you have the perfect recipe for an inspiring afternoon.

At Redgate Wines , a boutique Margaret River winery, visitors will learn about Bill Ullinger, a former bomber pilot who married his English war bride Dorothy and together started Redgate Wines in 1977. Redgate Wines turns 40 this year, the same year that Dorothy turns 90.
They grow, harvest, process, bottle and sell all their wines on site and at Sunset Wine will be showcasing a selection of their 18 wines, including their Chardonnays and Cabernet Sauvignons that all score high ratings from James Halliday.

Last year Thorny Devil brewery found itself with – pardon the pun – some thorny problems.

The Mandurah region's craft brewery dramas started with a faulty tank the brewery didn't have the funds to replace, so they turned to crowdfunding in a bid to raise $25,000 they needed to replace it. Then their website crashed and Thorny Devil experienced delays in brewing. On top of that they lost $3000 worth of Glycol to a windstorm. On December 11 Thorny Devil announced it had a 103 per cent success rate in its crowd funding with the help of 275 supporters and will have a happy story to tell at Sunset Wine where they will be showing off their craft beers and ciders, including their rosy-coloured pomegranate cider.

Along with its range of SBS, Chardonnay, Rose (dry style), Fuchsia (sweet rose), White Fuchsia (sweet white), Cabernet Merlot, Merlot, Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon, Happs will be serving the Fuchsia and White Fuchsia in a "Frose-style" and "Froscato-style" slushies, likely to appeal to a younger audience.

Settlers Ridge will be at the event with its 100 per cent organic and allergy friendly wines that are chemical free and very low in preservatives, which can still be cellared like conventional wines, but are great for people with severe allergies to preservatives. The winery will be releasing its new vintage of the slightly unusual Chenin Sauvignon Blanc which is very slightly oaked and less fruity than its Sauvignon Blanc.

Margaret River winery Harmans Estate will be offering its 2014 GG Cabernet Sauvignon at Sunset Wine with grapes harvested from a vineyard in the northern part of the Margaret River Wine Region. The grapes were harvested straight into open top fermenters, where they sat on skins for 45 days. No mechanical crushing of the grapes occurred, so the colour and tannin were able to slowly integrate into the wine.

Pressed straight into French Oak Puncheons, this wine matured for 20 months before being bottled without fining which the makers say results in a rich Cabernet loaded with black olive, tobacco, sage, subtle eucalyptus and blackcurrants and ripe plums. The fine grained French oak adds a caramel/cocoa sweetness to the palate

Other wines will be available from Umamu Estate Wine , Barton Jones Wines , Clown Fish and Cowaraumup Wines , Chapman Grove , Gilberts Wines , House of Cards , #home ">Howling Wolves , Pieroth and Talisman Wines .

Spirits will be on offer from Bloom with its premium London Dry Gin and Great Southern Distilling Company along with craft beers from Gage Roads .

Food will come from Tapasman serving Spanish style, restaurant quality street food that can be eaten in one hand, Two Queens , the Chocolate Chilli Pork Company , Coco Lycious whipped dessert, Creative Catering , Ole Paella , Saigon Eats and Shak Shuka .

Sunset Wine will be open from 2.30pm to 7.30pm on the Saturday and Sunday.

Tickets can be pre-purchased for $28 (including booking fee and charges) from Eventbrite or at the gate for $33. Ticket includes entry to event, tasting glass, complimentary wine tastings and live music. Food is available to buy, wine by the glass can be enjoyed and take home products will be available.

The main entrance is off Brighton Road and The Esplanade and buses run to Scarborough from the Glendalough Train Station on the Joondalup Line. Go to www.transperth.wa.gov.au for timetables and maps. There is a taxi rank outside the Rendezvous Grand Hotel or direct with Uber.

There will be live music performances from the main stage each day from Lace and Lion – a duo performing re-worked cover classics from the 60s to alternative tracks from the 90s to modern day Indie - and Nadene Elly Duo. Nadene's sound has been likened to that of Missy Higgins, Lianne la Havas and Joss Stone. Artists such as Amy Winehouse, Norah Jones, Alanis Morissette, Jack Johnson and Angus and Julia Stone have all had a major impact in the creation of this rising artist.

Sunset Wine will once again feature its Sunset Balcony where visitors can hang out with a glass of wine and watch the sun go down.
