Who needs a beach holiday in January? Who needs sand in their butt, sunburn and battling traffic jams on Nepean Highway. Many of us would rather stay home in sophisticated Melbourne soaking up some great culture.

One place to do this is at the brand new SummerSalt Outdoor Arts Festival which will envelop the tiny suburb of Southbank over five weekends from January 23.

Events will either be free or low-cost live and include music, dance, circus, installations, circus acts and theatre.

And the whole area is a stage with performances held in various outdoor terraces, gardens, forecourts and temporary stages around Melbourne's arts precinct.

This fabulous Arts precinct includes organisations such as the Arts Centre Melbourne, ABC, Australian Centre for Contemporary Arts, Chunky Move, Melbourne Recital Centre, Melbourne Theatre Company, Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, Opera Australia, The Australian Ballet and the Victorian College of the Arts.

That's a lot of talent squeezed into the few blocks that make up Southbank.

The program is enormous with both free and many low cost events. There will be late night music events, cinema, dance, drama art and all kinds of incredibly creative pop-ups.

Highlights include Home, which will see 7,000 colourful wooden houses popping up across the city. Then there is Creature Features, a series of giant inflatable animal installations.

Exxopolis , that inflatable wonderland you can walk through, will be with us again.

There will be free concerts at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl from the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra that I have detailed in full. Click here.

Dodds St will be transformed into a giant chessboard awaiting human pieces. Sounds tantalising!

The closing weekend coincides with White Night Melbourne. You will be able to see Pixel Mountain, a specially constructed 10 metre wall that will act as a performance area for highly exuberant aerial dancing and interactive projection work.

It is worth getting on their mailing list as there are some amazing events afoot.

During the day, families families rule with lots of fun free and low cost events such as itheatre, puppetry, storytelling, giant art installations and workshops. Perfect for the school holidays.

And in the evening Southbank comes alive with outdoor concerts, street-art, theatre and cinema.
