Summernats - short for Summer Nationals - is an annual event held at the Exhibition Park in Canberra (EPIC), 10 minutes north of the CBD. Over 100,000 street machine enthusiasts gather each year to enjoy "Australia's Biggest Horse Power Party". If you like all things related to cars and street machines, then this event is designed for you. The event runs over four days and includes Australia's Top Street Machine judging competition, the world's best burnout battle, precision driving demos, horsepower heroics and more. People come from all over Australia to experience the street machine spectacular before rocking out to live concerts by top Australian rock and hip hop acts at night. Each year this event seems to fall on the hottest days in January, where the combination of hot tyres burning and raw summer heat makes this literally the hottest event of the year.

The event kicks off with a Summernats City Cruise around the city streets on Thursday 5th of January, so kids and car enthusiasts can see (and hear!) the street machines go by. The cruise will begin at the EPIC at noon and drive down Northbourne Avenue to London Circuit and return.

Back at the EPIC, Summernats have already smashed their previous record of how many privately owned street cars that will be on display, with over 2,000 cars organised for 2017. Walk around and look under the hoods of these impressive vehicles, watch the burnouts, check out the street machines cruising around the track and cheer on the competitions with fellow car enthusiasts. From car judging, burnout competition heats and finals, airbrush art displays, body ink competitions, Australia's biggest motor retail trade show displays, merchandise stalls, audio soundoffs and classic and vintage car displays, there is plenty to see and do on the program. See here for the events listed each day.

The entertainment each year is just as popular as the daytime burnouts, with headlining acts ensuring a great night at the track. This year check out Thirsty Merc, Airbourne and hip hop artists Drapht and Spit Syndicate as they put on a show for the thousands who stay on. To get you back to the city afterwards on the Friday and Saturday nights, there will be free ACTION buses between the EPIC and the City Bus Station between 7pm and midnight. The last service will depart EPIC at midnight. See here for details.

There are also camping options if you buy a season pass to the whole event, so you can just walk back to your own tent at the end of the night, or book in at Tent City where the tent is provided. See here for more details.

Summernats 30 is set to be another huge event and the ultimate way to kick off 2017. Join thousands of car enthusiasts, families and visitors to the city at this adrenalin-charged event, which is literally the biggest party on the Canberra events calendar. Check out the Summernats website and Facebook for all the details and photos from previous years, to give you an idea of what to expect.

If you love to watch the burnouts, then see below the YouTube video of the "Best Burnout Ever" and Guinness World Record Attempt at Summernats 2015. Turn up the sound on your computer to get the full effect and enjoy the party in 2017!
