If, like me, the drivel on the television each night is testing your sense of humour, let me share a theatre production that will have you quietly chuckling in your seats.
Summer Wonderland, by Australian playwright, theatre director and screenwriter, Matthew Ryan, is currently being performed by Mates Theatre Genesis (MTG) in Cleveland's Donald Simpson Centre. MTG are a not-for-profit community theatre group based in Brisbane's Redlands who have been entertaining locals for over thirty years.
"Welcome to Dickens Court, where a Christmas Lights competition has the neighbourhood at War! Old fashioned battler Bob has just lost his job, his neighbour Eugene is in serious debt after the arrival of his mail-order bride and the snobs across the road are desperate to buy a beachfront apartment. When they discover the grand prize in the Christmas Lights competition could solve their money problems, it means WAR!
A hilarious Christmas comedy about fake snow, fairy lights and the great Australian Dream".
I attended Opening Night which was the first time the MTG had partnered with the Donald Simpson Centre, which proved to be a good venue for these productions. There is a cafe area where patrons can sit comfortably with their purchase of hot or cold beverages and snacks before the show and the viewing area is spacious.
Summer Wonderland moves along quickly, and of course, it's not as simple as just being a comedy routine as it delves into family dynamics, aspirations, and the Russian Mafia. Respect to MTG for nurturing newer, younger players to the team.
