Footscray gets SLAMMED as the Jets take on the Sharks
Roller Derby is at its peak right now in Australia. A great sport for girls and women to participate in and support, as well as an intense fitness session for those who wish to join in the fun but without the physical contact part of the sport. A new derby league based in Melbourne's West, WestSide Derby Dollz, is running a Summer Slam session for all newcomers to the sport to come along to and see what all the fuss is about.
The event will be hosted at the YMCA Gym, Recwest, located on the corner Essex & Market St, Footscray. Entry by gold coin donation and the bout (game) event will run from 11am – 12.30pm with your chance to talk with the skaters and officials afterwards about the sport and whether it's right for you or your kids.
Spectators are of course always welcome and baked goods and merchandise will be on sale to complete your derby experience.
Find out how YOU can join in the fun. Whether you are a beginner, experienced skater, junior or adult, WestSide has a roller derby program for you! WestSide Derby Dollz run a range of courses and programs for all ages and fitness levels. For the adults and beginners, there is Derby Fit. This is for those who want to learn to skate, learn the skills of the derby players and just have fun on wheels. Derby fit is non-contact and will teach you stops, jumps, speed, endurance, safe skating (and falling!). This is a great workout for your legs, butt and all over cardio. Plus a lot of fun!
These classes are open to men and women over the age of 16, and are held at the Laverton Skate Centre on Saturdays from 3:30 – 5:00pm. At the end of each term you will have the chance to pass the White Star level Roller Derby test and join WestSide as a roller derby skater.
WestSide also run Junior Derby classes, which are open to boys and girls of ages between 6 and 16, in two groups: 6-11 and 12-16. This could be the perfect Christmas present for your daughter or niece. Derby is a great way for kids to build physical fitness and friends in a non-traditional and non-confrontational setting. If your kid is just not into tennis, dancing or basketball, derby maybe a great option for your little rebel. The Junior Derby classes are also held at Laverton Skate Centre. Classes run on Thursdays 5:30-6:30pm during school terms. If you're not sure whether skating is right for your kids, or whether they will enjoy it, WestSide recommends you attend Laverton Skate Centre's Learn to Skate classes, held Saturdays & Sundays 9:30-10:30am as a taste tester of life on wheels.
