The hot days of the Summer school holidays are on their way. The kids of Canberra are looking forward to cooling down at local swimming centres , splashing in river swimming holes , relaxing by backyard pools and jumping over sprinklers in the garden. If it gets too hot in the middle of the day, the museums and galleries around the city are a refreshing respite, with air conditioning and free activities to enjoy all Summer long.

As well as these things to do, there are also STACKS of exciting programs for kids of all ages to book into around the city. Would your kids like to learn a few circus tricks, do a painting class, improve their basketball skills or spend time on the water learning how to sail? The following list is just 25 Summer school holiday programs on offer around the region - from basketball to break dancing and everything in between.



1/ Kulturebreak dance studio in Wanniassa will be having dance workshops in break dancing, hip hop and contemporary dance. At the end of the week there is a performance to show friends and family the new skills and routines they have learnt. See details above and here .

2/ The Warehouse Circus in Chifley and Kaleen will be running circus classes over the month of January. If your kids enjoyed Webers Circus that came through the city late this year, they will enjoy learning some of the tricks themselves such as stilt walking, uni-cycling, juggling and the basics of trapeze. 3/ NIDA at the Street Theatre in Canberra will be having acting classes these school holidays. Learn improvisation, voice and movement, devising, acting and rehearsing scenes. If your kids have enjoyed drama at school, or acting in the school play, then they are guaranteed to have fun and learn new skills with NIDA. See details here .

4/ Studio MAP in Griffith will be having "POKE-Art / Manga & Illustration Workshops" art classes where kids and teenagers can learn to draw illustrations in the style of Pokémon. See details here .

5/ Lavender Art Studios** in Phillip will be running school holiday workshops for kids to learn art techniques and make new friends with the same interests. The studio also provides them with a relaxed and supportive environment to develop their artistic skills. See details here .



6/ Kids Pantry in Garran will be having Christmas-themed cooking classes in December, as well as January school holidays classes. Learn how to make Christmas cookies as well as meals such as "Turkey Roulade with Lemon and Herb Roasted Potatoes". By the time the classes are finished, the kids will be cooking the Christmas dinner! See details here .

7/ Kid Technic will be running robotics classes at Ainslie Football Club for kids to learn how to design and build robotics - and even teach them how to play soccer. The classes will be run in January, with all day classes between 9am - 4pm. See details here .

8/ ACT Junior Chess League will be offering school holiday programs for kids to learn the tricks and tips off chess experts at Campbell High School. 9/ Skyzone Trampoline Park at Belconnen are running school holiday workshops for kids to learn new flips, tricks, play dodgeball, trampolining soccer, have fun and make new friends. After each session, there is food and drinks in their party room. See details here .

10/ Yarralumla Play Station** has a Summer school holiday program with mini golf, train rides, crafts, dancing, games and more. See details here and below.



11/ Gooromon Park is a horse riding centre at Hall which will have school holiday classes so kids of all ages and abilities can learn to ride. These classes fill up very fast as soon as the details are on the website, so book in early. See details here .

12/ Summer Music School in Bruce is a 2 week music program designed for kids of all ages and skill level. Between the 9th – 20th of January, over 400 ACT students will converge on the school to learn music together. Book early to secure your place. See details here .

13/ Fitness First in the CBD and Deakin will be running school holiday exercise programs designed for 14 - 18 year olds. Teens will be shown what to do in the gym, participate in classes and learn how to use the gym safely. See here for FAQs about the program and details here.

14/ Photo Access in Manuka will be hosting digital photography and software programs for kids to learn more about this computer artistry. Choose between a 2 day workshop and a 3 day course. See details here.

15/ King Swim will be having school holiday Fast Track swimming lessons at Deakin, Calwell, Macgregor and Majura Park. This is a good way for kids to practice their swimming four days in a row, or for new kids to see if they like it. See details here .

16/ The Australian Institute of Sport **in Bruce has a number of specialised seasonal sports camps to choose from, as well as their Sports Vacation Program which covers all the sports. There is also a program for pre-schoolers between the ages of 4 - 5 which teaches them co ordination skills. See details here .

17/ Canberra Potter Society in Watson will be running Summer workshops in January for those who want to get their hands dirty and create their own ceramic artwork. Parents and carers are also welcome to enrol with their children, so you can both enjoy the experience together. See details here .

18/ Basketball ACT at Belconnen Stadium will be having three day camps in January with coach Phil Brown. Kids learn correct shooting techniques and how to co ordinate footwork and body alignment. See details here .

19/ The Canberra Yacht Club in Yarralumla will be having school holiday programs on the calm waters of Lake Burley Griffin. They provide sailing courses for boys and girls between 7 - 17 years of age, from beginners through experienced juniors. 20 / Bricks4Kids in Gungahlin will have creative LEGO® building workshops for kids aged between 5 – 13, using their BRICKS 4 KIDZ® models and LEGO® games. See details here .

22/ Southern Cross Gymnastics in Erindale will be running fun classes for kids of all ages these school holidays. Try out different pieces of equipment, learn new skills and gain confidence at the same time. See details here .

23/ Australian Sports Camps will be having three sports programs on offer for January, which are held at Canberra Grammar in Red Hill. Choose between soccer, cricket or basketball and develop skills and techniques. See details here .

24/ Canberra Tennis Academy in O'Connor will be having a school holiday programs for kids aged between 4 - 16 to learn the correct techniques of playing tennis. See details here .

25/ Zoocation** is an interactive school holiday program for kids at the National Zoo and Aquarium in Yarralumla. Kids get to go "behind the scenes" and learn more about the animals that live there, play games and make toys for the animals. See details here .

Many Canberra locals leave the city over the Summer holidays to visit family for Christmas or escape to the coast, however there is a lot to do and see in our own city. With these 25 options and many more, the kids won't even have time to get bored this Summer!
