Do Something Exotic this Summer, Learn a Language
Learn to order your own latte in Italy, sangria in Spain or vodka in Russia. Book yourself into a summer language short course and cross one of your New Year's resolutions off your list by the end of January 2014.

Here are a few ideas to get you started.


Get into the mood with Sea, Sun & French, a suite of one to three week courses at the Alliance Francaise in St Kilda from 6 - 26 January 2014.

Adult courses start from $290 for a one week French for travellers course (15 hours).

Make sure the kids can order their babycino on the Champs-Elysees. Children as young as three years old are also catered for with a 10 hour courses from $195.

Short courses are also available for intermediate and advanced level as well as secondary school revision classes.


El Patio offers Spanish two week intensive courses between 13 - 24 January 2014 in the CBD or Northcote, starting from $180 for a 7.5 hour conversation course. Discounts available for early enrolments.

Head to the Middle Kingdom to learn an entirely different script and language. Red Crane School of Chinese offers Mandarin beginner's level evening intensive classes from 8 - 23 January 2014.

Come after work and build your business language skills to enable you to communicate with one of Australia's significant trading partners, or simply learn enough to find your way around the country as a tourist. Classes are held at Suite 606, 343 Little Collins St, Melbourne.

For short courses in virtually anything you can't go past the CAE. They offer courses in 21 different languages from Arabic to Vietnamese and many of them run over the summer period. Classes are generally held in the city centre, though some are offered through Box Hill TAFE in Melbourne's East.

The East Melbourne & German Language Centre at 354 Victoria Parade, East Melbourne has you covered for a fair chunk of the northern hemisphere with their summer intensive courses. Fees start from $310 and classes are run in either day or evening blocks between 14-23 January 2014. Choose from German, Italian, French, Arabic and Russian.
