Classy food without the price tag
Summer House at Fairfield RSL is a local casual dining restaurant with a feel of elegance and comfort. A common stereotype for local RSL clubs is 'buffet' style food, which lack originality and quality. However Fairfield RSL not only does not offer buffets, but also offers restaurants that serve top quality food and service. For me, it is a cosmopolitan food court, but one with a stylish interior and spot on service. One of my favourite restaurants in Fairfield RSL is Summer House.
It is a restaurant where I enjoy catching up with friends locally, while experiencing top-class service and quality food. It has won the True Local Business Best Casual Dining Restaurant award in 2008. After coming back from work in the busy CBD area, the comfortable padded seats with a resort style feel puts a relief from a stressful day of work.
The menu offers an array of mains and sides that would satisfy many different palates. One of my favourite entrees is the pea and ham soup, which is supposedly a 'light snack' but the size is definitely quite filling. However, the mushroom tart tops the list as a light snack, it is filled with button mushrooms and topped with goats' cheese. The tart is light and dainty and makes you want more.
The menu overall features a good selection of cuisine, from Vietnamese to Thai and burgers to steaks. Mains include seafood, lamb, pork and beef. The price is decent for such quality food. If you choose to go during the week from Monday to Thursday, they also offer a mid week special price for 3 courses with all the favorites just under $40.
Dessert menu offers many traditional desserts that you'd see at other restaurants but presentation and flavour within the desserts overcome any standard expectation. I particularly enjoyed the chocolate fondant, so rich in flavour and moist without being too overpowering as most fondants do.
I enjoy going to restaurants that are slightly hidden; inside complexes, alleys and local clubs. The restaurant is within Fairfield RSL, which is conveniently across Fairfield station and a spacious carpark with ample car parking space. It is open 7 days a week for lunch and dinner. The same menu is available for both lunch and dinner so it is a great way to catch-up with friends and family on a weekend afternoon.
In order to enjoy that sense of seclusion, you should choose to sit inside the restaurant rather than closer to the entrance because it is next to the poker machines. If you sit within the restaurant, you probably wouldn't realize after a while that you're within a local RSL but a fancy restaurant away from home.
Despite being called 'Summer House' with a resort style interior, you probably won't be able to go inside Fairfield RSL without being dressed appropriately. So don't get deceived and come in thinking you can wear sneakers or thongs/flip flops. It is a place with a cosmopolitan menu that would suit the palate of many.
