By the time you find The Kiosk, hidden away at City Beach there is nothing between you and the beautiful Indian Ocean except a sandy path and some dune vegetation. This is sea-side dining taken at its literal best - there is even a path directly out of the cafe straight down to the beach - and with its cheery blue corrugated tin walls and red pot plants on the tables, it has a fun and beachy feel that will make you want to kick your shoes off and bury them in the sand while you enjoy a cold beer or glass of wine.

The Kiosk is normally open for breakfast and lunch, but starting on October 20, its summer dinner season officially opened, and now you can enjoy a drink and meal while watching the sun set over Rottnest every Thursday to Sunday.

It's best to keep in mind that this isn't like West End Deli or Blake Street Cafe which are cafes during the day and then transform into fine dining venues at night. The Kiosk is a casual, family-friendly, sandy feet venue during the day, and it is exactly the same at night time. The dinner menu is a range of simple crowd-pleasing favourites including burgers, salads, pasta and fish and chips. In fact, the summer dinner menu is just the lunch menu with a few extra options. It's cafe food, served with a friendly smile and a glass of wine while looking out at one of the best views in Perth.

Children are welcome at the Kiosk, with a small but dedicated kids menu (toasted sandwiches, chicken and chips, fish and chips, burger all under $12), and the fact that much of the cafe is outdoors, long communal tables under beach umbrellas and shade sails lined with fairy lights, means it is perfect for families, especially since there is a playground outside and the beach is within tantalising reach.

Dinner includes some seafood options such as the crispy skin salmon on roast potatoes ($28.50) or the barramundi on pearl couscous ($28.50) or fish and chips with salad ($22.50).

There are four burger options including beef, chicken, veggie and pulled pork, all $16.50 and because chips aren't included, you can add them (or wedges) to your meal for $4/$5.

Other options are pasta of the day (when I went it was a spicy chorizo with olives, capsicum and Napolitana sauce) at market price, a Scotch fillet with wedges and salad ($24.50) and a delicious sounding chicken salad which is served with rocket, pear, sundried tomato, parmesan and a minted yoghurt dressing ($22.50).

We enjoyed the fish and chips which was a single large piece of fried fish (you can also have grilled) with chips, a very aioli tasting tartare sauce and a dressed salad, and the bruschetta which was three slices of toasted bread with olive tapenade, halved cherry tomatoes and feta ($14). I loved the addition of tapenade to the bruschetta but I found the halved cherry tomatoes - though very pretty - a bit difficult to eat without dropping them everywhere.

There is a cake cabinet with a range of pies, tarts and cakes for dessert and because it is licenced, you can order bubbly, wine and beer to enjoy with your dinner.

The Kiosk is a cheery, relaxing summer venue perfect for a beachside dinner. The menu starts at 5pm which is great for families, and there is time for a play at the beach or park before the sun sets. Bring your sunnies though.
