It's June and school is out! For anywhere between $89 and $350 per week, kids ages 2 through 18 can go to summer day camp in Naples, FL.

Offerings of summer camps can tell you a lot about a particular area. In Naples, FL, where Florida Gulf Coast University's men's basketball team skyrocketed to national prominence by winning the 2013 NCAA Tournament, everyone wants to be part of "Dunk City." Nine or more separate camps are offered in town by various providers from June through August.

Second most popular is Karate and Taekwando, with at least six venues with half-day sessions given all over town. And if your child can't get enough of soccer, volleyball, dodgeball, paddleball, tennis, or flag football, hoops or even fencing, there is a group waiting.

The advantage of being on the Gulf of Mexico is not lost on Naples' kids, either. They can sail, paddleboard, swim, snorkel, and scuba to their heart's desire or to the depth of their parent's wallets, whichever comes first.

There will be cheerleading, dance, jazz, drama, music, crafts, art, and movies being discussed and done. The braver little critters in the household can elect to actually camp overnight at nearby Myakka, as part of their daily field trips, while most public groups are more likely to be confined entirely to half day sessions.

Most activities for kids don't appear to need a hard sell. However, when it comes to academics, camps carry energetic names like Cool Chemistry, Super and Inventor Science to give interest a boost. The choice of one camp name, Kidd Kollege, may not be the best assurance of intellectual stimulation, but pre-schoolers there can count on plenty of skill enhancing activity.

Naples Preserve's staff focuses on raising confidence through role play. When "Dolls Go to Camp" their owners do too, along with one packed suitcase for their Big Girl doll. At Fleischman Park, "Beyond Rock Climbing" is about overcoming fear as much as it is about rock climbing skill. Another well meaning camp, supervised by Hodges University, worries about the role of girls in math and science. A week of tutorials guide attendees in development of an app to find lost pets.

And if your child is edgy and athletic, the City of Naples deems skateboarding an "Extreme Sport." Heroes or wanna be heroes will enjoy the summer practicing Fireman or Junior LifeGuard or Junior Park Ranger skills.

So pick up your t-shirt, and get in a group photo. 2014 summer day camp is about to begin!
