I retired to Florida, but can't keep my feet still, or my pen full of ink. Find me eating, playing, traveling, and then telling the world about it.
Summer sizzles in Naples' cooking classes
Naples touts its wide variety of restaurants to tourists and locals alike. But in the summer, many restaurants cater to budding culinary interests of Collier County's students. Here's a few fabulous places where aspiring chefs can learn, enjoy, and sneak a taste or two of food they've learned to prepare:
Sur La Table, located at The Mercado, US41 and Vanderbilt Beach Road. The retail store boasts a professional kitchen and highly trained staff to provide kids (ages 8 to 12) and teens (ages 13 to 17) with in-depth culinary experience. Four classes are 2014 Summer's draw, where two hours a day for five days straight, enrollees learn about food fundamentals, the science behind food and its preparations, and the art of baking. Fee per class: $250
Daniela's Summer Camp, located at Wiggins Pass and US41, North Naples. Chef Daniela challenges her charges with making the prettiest salad or winning the best pizza contest. They will dig their hands into warm dough and learn details while preparing Italian/Romanian/Hungarian specialties of the house. Five successive days with three and a half hour classes each are offered in July and August 2014. Fee per class: $225
Cider Press Cafe, located on Piper Blvd near the corner of Immokalee and Airport Pulling Roads. Three age groups (9 to 11, 12 to 14, and 15-17) are individually welcome to come indoors for summer culinary camp, and learn to prepare healthy, green foods. Coursework centers on plants vs animal diets, and what makes them different. Five days. Fee per class: $250
Meanwhile, parents absorbing all the luscious detail of their kid's experience in the kitchen can run away from home in the evenings for their own special treat in the company of other adults at:
Norman Love Confectioners, US41 in Naples' Park Shore neighborhood. Classes are held in Ft Myers. World renowned artisan craftsmen lead adult only, single subject, three hour evening classes in the cooking salon or gelateria. Enrollees must wear hair nets and closed toe shoes, and will be privy to Norman Love's techniques and factory production for cupcakes, molded niceties, elegant home desserts, truffles, and the pairing of wine with chocolate. Fee per evening class: $95.
