I always think of Fed Square (corner Swanston and Flinders Streets, Melbourne CBD) as Melbourne's success story. It brings community together, showcases multicultural Melbourne and puts on a ton of events throughout the year; most of them free, for families and friends to enjoy. It has the lifeblood of Melbourne flowing through its veins. Summer is here and The Square is ready for Summer At The Square from 3-29 February 2024 on various days and times, and it's all free. Fed Sq is home to free live music and outdoor cinema at the Main Square, and there's a lineup of homegrown global superstars and international drawcards on the agenda. A curated program of film and music ensures that you have something new each night of the week.

The Classics are back with live scores accompanying silent films on Tuesdays; Outdoor Cinema on Wednesdays; and the By Candlelight program in play on Thursdays, featuring original artists performing intimate live shows by the gorgeous glow of thousands of twinkling candles. A real sight to behold, but one so popular, you need to get in early to get up close and personal to enjoy the show, provided you're not ready to leave in a hurry because you may well be in a situation of first in, last out, and have to wait for the crowd to disperse. Do take all health safety precautions with the new strain of COVID-19 on the rise. If you're unwell, do stay home and don't pass it on.

Come Saturdays, enjoy free live music for all. Featured are big-name local and international artists such as SIX60 and Sampa the Great, free opera and a brand-new Afro Caribbean Carnival. Can't afford to see Taylor Swift? Come along and catch her alter-ego for free, as Filipino drag star Taylor Sheesh steps onto the Main Stage with her pop superstar energy. It's time to get outdoors and enjoy a summer of sun, sound and cinema at the Square. Be sure to check out the full program on the website .

The Summer Events kick off with BMW's Free Opera for All at 4 in the afternoon on Sat 3 Feb; presented in partnership with Opera Australia. Traditional and Contemporary opera arias will be performed by world-leading opera singers. Bringing the event to a close is JACOT√ČNE by Candlelight on Thursday 29 Feb at 8.30pm. Just 17, her star is on the rise as she delivers with power well beyond her years. Come along for a candlelight event of soulful song to take you through the evening. There are of course a lot more events to enjoy in the 'in-between', like three nights of Summer Films on 14, 21 and 28 Feb at 8pm. They're designed for music and musical lovers with the fabulous Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone in La La Land; a documentary about the 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival - Summer of Soul; and one of Aussie's best - The Sapphires.

Films accompanied by live musical scores include the ever popular 'The Sentimental Bloke' with live score by Paul Mac; 'Surreal Shorts' with a live Jazz score by Peter Knight and Dung Nguyen; and 'Our Hospitality' accompanied by local bluegrass legends Blue Grassy Knoll. The Kiwis from across the ditch will be heading our way in the form of the chart-topping NZ sensation SWIX60, and our very own Budjerah, a Coodjinburra musician will be at The Square for an intimate evening of soulful R&B-inspired pop in a candlelight event. For powerhouse vocals you have Sampa the Great. Zambian-born, enjoy a night of Afro hip hop. And of course Taylor Sheesh singing Swifty favourites accompanied by an energetic performance. Be sure to arrive at 7pm for pre-show entertainment for this one, as there'll be cheerleading performances, large-scale dance pop-ups and more.

Reuben Kaye by Candlelight is one not to be missed. Fast, on the edge and brutally funny, I've seen Reuben live and he's brilliant if you're not going to be offended by his unapologetically loud, politically active, queer, brash and fabulous performance. Last but not least, in the midst of all this entertainment is the Afro-Caribbean Carnival on 17 Feb from 5-11pm kicking off with music, food and culture. Enjoy international headliners and four local sound systems. Be sure to come dressed in carnival costume to join the 300 plus throng of costumed fans that'll be there for an evening of fun, flair, food and festivities. Be sure to check the website for the finer details.
