In the humid weather, it takes an incentive to push me out of my routine and comfort zone. Okay, I actually mean my rut. Sitting under a ceiling fan tends to meet most of my summer requirements. What about you?
However, I did venture out to see Grand View Hotel's
Summer "Art Upstairs" exhibition recently. Grand View, located in Cleveland in Brisbane's south eastern suburbs, is a grand old dame overlooking Moreton Bay to North Stradbroke Island. Built in 1851, the establishment is renowned for its beer garden to local residents and tourists alike.
Hotels these days have to offer more options than just pokies and beers in order to remain competitive. They are now a popular destination for the 'coffee and cake' crowd. Grand View Hotel has taken this a step further by utilising the top floor of the building - Upstairs - as an Art Gallery with a seasonal change of displays.
The Summer "Art Upstairs" exhibition opened mid January with artwork from members of the Old SchoolHouse Gallery as well as from seven other art groups from across the Redlands Coast. It is a bright and cheerful presentation with all pieces available for purchase.

Entry to the exhibition is FREE and you are invited to submit a vote for your favourite item. I also found the exhibiting artists' dossier interesting and somewhat inspirational. Will I one day be able to pick up a paintbrush that is not to be used on a kitchen wall?
The historic building does not have a lift, so if you are unable to manage a staircase this exhibition will not suit you. But that's okay because you can sit and wait by a frangipani with the '$10 coffee and cake special' of the day. Or something else if you prefer.
Grand View Hotel is located at 49 North Street, Cleveland and the exhibition is open for viewing during open hours. Make the effort - it is enjoyable.
