Anything For The Kids
Whilst this sunshine's generally an invitation, occasionally it's a cue - stay inside. Particularly in January, with Melbourne's stifling heat, indoor fun can become a discerning move. Pixar's "Inside Out", and Universal Picture's "Minions", two opportunities to chill out this summer - for free! In case you're unfamiliar with these awesome kids flicks (with laughs for big kids too), allow me to acquaint you:

INSIDE OUT (a quirky adventure):

11 year old Riley enjoys a comfortable, predictable life. When, upon moving to San Francisco, her world's flipped upside-down. From coziness to bleakness, her intricately composed 'emotional headquarters' is thrown off-balance. Disoriented, overwhelmed, her five key emotions ("Joy", voiced by Amy Poehler, "Sadness", voiced by Phyllis Smith, "Disgust", voiced by Mindy Kaling, "Fear", voiced by Bill Hader, and "Anger", voiced by Lewis Black) are unsettled. Her 'memory islands', becoming increasingly destabilized. With Joy under attack, Riley attempts to navigate both her competing emotions, plus never-ending mishaps.

MINIONS (sidesplitting mayhem):

These lovable lemon-colored lilliputians have endured for eons. Sole purpose: serve the most vile of villains - T Rex, Napoleon, vampires. However, after years of solitude spent in Antarctica (pre-Gru), they grow antsy. Longing for a new leader, Kevin decides it's high time. With faithfuls Stuart and Bob by his side, he sets sail for New York. Upon attending the famous Villain-Con convention, the trio successfully impress the depraved Scarlet Overkill (voiced by Sandra Bullock). Their first evil assignment: steal the royal crown. However, after being caught in the act, then escaping, Bob accidentally winds up loosening Excalibur. Upon being crowned, ENRAGING their new master.

These animations are being screened at libraries across the city of Melbourne:

1) "Inside Out" at City Library (to book)
2) "Minions" at Kathleen Syme Library (to book)
3) "Minions" at Southbank Library (to book)

Centrally located, you can also enjoy many of the CBD's other offerings - National Gallery of Victoria, the nicely sheltered Birrarung Marr playground, plus the endless shops & eateries. However, given strict parking conditions, and general lack of street-parking, I'd avoid driving - unless you're okay with often hefty secured parking fees. You're main option is train - to Southern Cross Station (for Southbank Library), to Melbourne Central Station (for Kathleen Syme Library), and to Flinders St Station (for City Library), plus short walks. Although, if attending Southbank you may have some luck parking in South Melbourne.

With these two popular, child-endorsed films you can't go wrong. They won't only help cope with the summer swelter, but have the entire family in stitches.
