Shop for bargains out of a suitcase in the NewActon Precinct
Suitcase Rummage is returning to Canberra once again, for bargain hunters to enjoy an afternoon of shopping at the NewActon Precinct. This unique market, which is also held in other cities around Australia, is a fun and low-cost way to hold a market - which is a cross between a flea market, boot sale, garage sale and designer clothing sale! Sellers pack up a suitcase or two of their wares, open up the suitcase and then start selling. It's that easy. What lies within the suitcases is the mystery - whether it be antiques, artwork, clothing, shoes, books, vintage jewellery, handmade paper or knitted socks. The emphasis is on second hand or handmade so what you will find at the Suitcase Rummage is anyone's guess - and there lies the fun.
Wander along and have a peek in each suitcase - you are sure to find a bargain - or several!

Suitcase Rummage began in Brisbane with two friends Isabel FitzGerald and Daniele Constance, who both have a passion for markets as a way to get the community together back in the "town square". They also felt there was a need for a smaller step for creative folk who needed to test out the market with their unique designs or products, without the overheads of the larger markets. Selling out of a low cost, funky old suitcase was the perfect solution - the older, the better!
The markets are held a few times a year at Kendall Lane in the NewActon Precinct, just minutes from the CBD. The NewActon Precinct is an environmentally sustainable, architecturally beautiful part of the city with its own community, sculptures, restaurant's and cafes. The internationally-acclaimed Nishi Building is a highlight of the precinct and is visible from the market as you browse around. This area is ideal for this mini market, as it already has a strong feeling of community and this will bring everyone together for an afternoon of good ol' fashioned rummaging, bargain hunting and banter.

For people who like to haggle, some suitcase owners are happy to meet you somewhere in the middle with a good price, however others may stay with their fixed price, depending on their product. Emerging artists, jewellery makers and clothing designers who spend months getting ready, use these markets to gauge reactions and test their products. You may walk away with a unique designer piece that nobody else has, or perhaps find a vintage dress that has its own history and story. The joy of these markets is wandering along and discovering treasures in each suitcase. For details of the next markets, or if you would like to book a spot, see the Suitcase Rummage website and Facebook for more details. Also, remember to take cash for all the purchases you are sure to make.
Are you ready to rummage?
