Exploring the Yarra Glen and Kangaroo Ground areas is a great way to spend a leisurely summer day.

Heading out from Melbourne's north east suburb of Eltham, you will be offered a relaxing drive through Melbourne's outer suburbs and rural region as you head towards Kangaroo Ground via Main Road Eltham.

1.Stop at the Kangaroo Ground War Memorial which is high on the hill not long after turning onto Eltham-Yarra Glen Road from Kangaroo Ground. In summer, the tower becomes a fire spotting tower but you can still climb the tower and be offered superb views of Melbourne's skyline, the Dandenong Ranges and the Kinglake Ranges. There are public toilets, picnic facilities and a new viewing platform. The area is open daily.

Continuing on towards Yarra Glen, Sugarloaf Reservoir is located in the Christmas Hills almost midway between Yarra Glen and Kangaroo Ground. Enjoy the picturesque drive along the Eltham-Yarra Glen road towards Christmas Hills.

2. If you are in need lunch, afternoon tea or just a coffee, then stop at the Watsons Creek Antiques and Cafe which is located at 765 Eltham-Yarra Glen Road. The Cafe is fully licensed and is open Wednesday through Sunday from 9am till 5pm and on public holidays with the exception of Christmas Day and Boxing Day. On extreme brushfire alert days the cafe is closed. The cafe reopened on 8 January 2014 following a Christmas holiday week closure.

3. Continuing on from Watsons Creek, you will shortly come across the turn off to Sugarloaf Reservoir where there are multiple activities to continue your day.

The Reservoir Park is open daily from 8.30am and 5pm with the closing time extended to 7pm during daylight savings. Take a stroll along the shores of the reservoir, enjoy a picnic at either the Saddle Dam picnic area or if you are after a bit more activity, there are numerous walks with the park.

Picnic facilities are located within the Saddle Dam picnic area with sheltered tables, toilets and car parking. [BREAK]

You can walk down towards the shore of the reservoir, where you can fish for Yellow Belly or Redfin but only from the shore. Live bait is not allowed so make sure you have some lures. You will need a recreational fishing license too. For further details see the Parks Victoria Sugarloaf Reservoir fishing guidelines.

So have a day out of the city exploring.
