For a sweet seaside escape from Sydney, visit on the edge of the Myall Lakes National Park. The dramatic headland is three hours north of the bustling city and is surrounded by spectacular coastal views and beautiful beaches.

Lighthouse is the headland's historic highlight. Built in 1875, the heritage-listed landmark is one of only two lighthouses in Australia with an external stairway. It is a little hike to the top, but the walk is great to unwind and immerse yourself in the coastal surrounds.

Before visiting I had no idea there was a place to stay up on the headland. Historic cottages belonging to keepers of the lighthouse are now retreats. Sleeping in the comfortable queen beds and waking up to majestic ocean views is going straight on the bucket list.

The cottages are fitted with all your modern day creature comforts - from private kitchen facilities, to plasma televisions, to big outdoor spaces. Rates vary depending on type of cottage and when you plan to stay. Check out the tariffs for respective prices.

The annual whale migration passes the area in winter. A good spot to catch this is below the lighthouse, on the point overlooking the southern beach. Picture a panorama of greenery, blue ocean, and spouts of water in the distance. This scenery changes with the seasons. Look out for dolphins in summer and vibrant wildflowers across the heathlands in spring.

Seal Rocks and Lighthouse Beach are beautiful neighbours of Sugarloaf Point. I could easily spend hours swimming and strolling the sands of Seal Rocks. The sparkling turquoise waters made it a postcard-perfect picture of paradise the morning we visited.

The Myall Lakes National Park also has a list of nice picnic spots and walking trails, like Sugar Creek trail. These are easy to get to if you base yourself at Sugarloaf Point. Keep an eye out for wildlife and unique coastal geography.

Whether you duck out of Sydney for a day or indulge in a few luxurious nights before the lighthouse, and surrounds is bound to show you a relaxing coastal escape.
