I came, I saw, I fell in love
Last Monday afternoon, a wintry gust swept my sister and me to wonderland.
Never have I paused in a cafe entrance to gape with such marvel at the furnishings.
Never has my first step toward a cake display cabinet felt like a step toward sensory bliss.
Until, with a fateful push from Mother Nature, I discovered the Sugar Deli Co cafe.
Adorned with the vintage decor of an Old-English teahouse, the restaurant/ café has graced the Scarborough waterfront for almost two years.
Lining the walls of the Sugar Deli Co, local flora cuttings drape silvery leaves and seep a fresh, countryside aroma.
A bright young girl welcomed us from behind the counter: "Hi, can I get you anything?"
I was still in a state of wonder, so my sister replied: "We're just admiring at the moment. It's our first time here."
The girl smiled heartily. "Oh! Would you like a tour?"
We were taken though a corridor – on one side we passed a cabinet where gourmet treats rested alluringly on silver platters; on the other side was a cosy arrangement of tables – to the Sugar Deli Co's delightful courtyard.
The Sugar Deli Co's interior takes you far from the hustle of the city and its visual charm may draw in curious passers-by.
But it's the cafe's menu that keeps patrons coming back and spreading word of the Sugar Deli Co wide and far.
The seasonal menu offers splendours like the signature Deli Breakfast (bacon, eggs, tomato and hash) and the café's signature Gypsy Toast (French-toasted banana bread with a fresh berry compote). Lunch dishes include the Catch of the Day and the Sugar Deli pie (chunky Angus steak with truffled mashed potatoes and peas).
And for dessert, you can't go past the delicious selection of cakes – a piece of which is (no kidding) enough for three.
The Sugar Deli Co is also fully licensed and fit with a glamorous bar that offers boutique beers, cocktails and wines.
And just when you thought the cafe couldn't get any closer to amazing, dogs are more than welcome – patrons can sit at the outdoor tables and tie their pets to nearby posts (staff will be more than happy to provide a bowl of water).
With stunning decor, exceptional service and an only-at-the-Sugar-Deli menu, this bright cafe is perfect for a coffee, a meal, and a reality escape.
