Sue McArthur Photography and Zoe McLoughlin Makeup have recently collaborated to provide a photography and makeup service from a home-based studio in Dover Heights (just around the corner from beautiful Bondi Beach).

I was fortunate enough to be offered the opportunity to trial their service. While I was excited about the chance to get some nice photos of myself, I have to be admit that I was a little hesitant about the actual experience itself – wondering if I would feel comfortable having my makeup done and photos taken. However, I was relieved when I arrived as Sue and Zoe were lovely, personable and down to earth; I immediately felt relaxed and comfortable.

Sue and Zoe offer a range of photo and makeup packages. I had two different makeup looks done, a few outfit changes and use of their extensive range of accessories (beautiful jewellery and headwear). Before we started the session, Zoe and Sue asked me about the type of look I was trying to achieve in the photos. Then, it was time to get to work.


Zoe is a wonderful makeup artist. As well has having an amazing skill for choosing colours and applying makeup, she has great communication skills. She took the time to ensure that she was working with me to achieve the kind of appearance that I had hoped for. She also took the time to teach me a thing or two about makeup application and skin care. As well as make-up, Zoe has a natural knack for style and she played a big part in choosing the accessories and colours for the photo shoot.


The photography sessions were lots of fun. I had no idea how much hard work goes into getting the perfect shot. One of the things I have always hated about photos of myself is that I feel the camera adds about 10kg. Sue observed that I am larger in my shoulders and arms in comparison to my waist, so we needed to position the shots so that they showed my waist. Sue was able to instruct me about how to position my body for each photo; admittedly it was sometimes physically awkward but the end results looked quite natural.


Although natural, fun and colourful was the look that I was going for in my photos, Zoe and Sue have the ability to photograph in a variety of styles and from looking at their gallery of shots it is clear that feminine glamour is one of their specialities.


One of the things that I loved about my time with Sue and Zoe was that it was relaxing as well as fun. The service was one- to-one (no other clients getting their makeup done at the same time as me), and the photo shoot was tailored to meet my needs. I also loved that there was no sales pitch to 'look forward to' at the end of the day. The package prices seem quite affordable and included a certain number of high resolution images which are yours to keep (Sue will edit them and send them to you on a CD within 3 weeks of your photo shoot). In comparison, I know of other studios that offer a free or discounted sitting fee, but charge over $100 for even a small print.

I left my time with Zoe and Sue on a real high, feeling glamorous and really happy with my photos. I am already planning my next session (I have always wanted to try the gothic look with a fake tattoo or two). I am just trying to decide whether I will go on my own or with some friends. I also think a voucher for a photo session would make a great gift for women of all ages.

Below are the packages that Sue and Zoe are currently offering, for their studio located in Dover Heights. However, they are really friendly and flexible, so if you have something else in mind you should probably just call them and ask. They also work individually – Zoe has experience doing makeup for weddings, hen's parties, formals, charity balls and fashion shows (she works from the CBD but can travel to other locations), and Sue photographs in a range of styles, including glamour portraits, product photography, children's portraits and small events.

(Note that hair and make-up are not provided for this package, you need to come to the studio already prepared. Unless you are experienced with make-up, I wouldn't recommend this package. The make-up was a lot heavier than I usually use but photographed perfectly.)
