SUD is the new venture of
Paolo Gatto, owner & chef of
Gatto Matto Trattoria (which translates to "mad cat") in Five Dock, a popular eatery that was the recipient of several awards for their food and service. Having recently closed Gatto Matto to concentrate on his new venture (amongst other things), Paolo Gatto's
SUD is conveniently located in Concord away from the main restaurant strip. This vibey little place is deceivingly large. And always busy.

I loved the noisy italian vibe of the place
Stepping into
SUD, the distinctive atmosphere was both enveloping and inviting and could easily have been a bustling eatery right in Italy with the sights, sounds and delicious aromas emanating from every corner of this place. The cutlery is presented rustically in an empty tin of peeled tomatoes, the water bottle a deep hue of blue reminiscent of the Mediterranean. Such simple things that add to the atmosphere. The
menu is pretty much written in Sicilian dialect, which is a nice touch, but fully explained in plain old English too.
We started off with the
Viddanu. This is an antipasto platter of freshly cut cold meats, cheeses and grilled vegetables. It looked great and was definitely fresh and the meats and cheeses were divine. Although the vegetables lacked a bit in taste (for me), they were not from a jar (my pet hate) so they get the thumbs up.

Antipasto platter, ham & cheese pizza, Tagghiata, Spiedinu Di Pisci
We ordered a full sized pizza (not from the menu) for my 5yr old, just ham and cheese, and he ate it all (bar the crust). He said it was the best pizza he has ever had. Considering I have a hard time getting him to eat anything, let alone even a kid sized pizza, it must have been good. It looked great as did other pizzas I saw being delivered to the other packed tables.
For main I went with the
Spiedinu di Pisci which is prawns, swordfish and baby octopus skewered served with rocket salad, wedges potatoes & lemon wedges. My partner chose the
Tagghiata which is grain fed sirloin steak served with rocket, grana padano cheese, cherry tomatoes, & peppercorn mignonette. I finished off with one of my favourites,
Baked Ricotta Cheesecake. I am looking forward to returning to try some other dishes soon.
