You don't get a lot of warning for the exit to the Sublime Point Lookout but once taken, you won't regret the impromptu decision, well, unless there is a large wedding function. That might take the edge off the tranquillity that this spectacular location has to offer.
Perhaps less well known than the lookout down the road at Bulli Tops, Sublime Point is far less commercial with only a restaurant/café that doubles as a wedding reception centre. It's situated in a very pleasant bush setting and has magnificent 180 degree views up and down the Illawarra coastline and far out to sea towards New Zealand.
When we arrive one early Thursday afternoon, the place is almost deserted and we claim the one and only picnic table with a view. We break out our picnic provisions and indulge in the fact we have the place almost to ourselves apart for two ultra keen bicycle riders who arrive.
Evidence this is a place where couples come to commit to each other are the many locks that are strewn along the safety fence. Some contain just names while others have romantic messages of sweet innocent love.
I've been lucky enough to visit some of the most beautiful lookouts around the world and I can honestly say that the Sublime Point Lookout is truly sublime. Don't make the mistake of underestimating it just because it's just off the M1 Motorway on the road to Wollongong. Take the turn off and treat yourself to one of worlds most breathtaking views.
