Sub Base Stories Tour.
Sub Base Platypus now open to visitors
The
Sub Base Stories Tour is a fascinating journey back through Sydney's history. We learn about the Cammeraygal Country and its early use as a source of food, shelter, medicine and tools for the Traditional Custodians of that land. Throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, the site was developed to meet industrial needs, including delivery of gas and then, during the Second World War, a torpedo factory and a service port for the British Navy submarine fleet. The site was then commissioned and named HMAS Platypus, acting as the base for the Royal Australian Navy’s Oberon-class submarines and other visiting submarines. The stories of this site and the times throughout its history are fascinating and the artefacts around the site transport us back in time.
The Sub Base Stories Tour is a fascinating journey back through history
Accompanied by a knowledgeable guide, we explored the lower and upper levels of Sub Base Platypus, including the Torpedo Factory Precinct. We learned about the important part this site has played in Sydney's history, not only in terms of protecting our shores from attack but also the social changes that occurred during this period, including opportunities for women to assume roles building torpedos, previously only available to men. The site was home to the first Australian submariner school and stories of the journey to become a submariner and the conditions of their work in service of our country were extraordinary.
