The Sturt's Desert Pea Porcelain Sculpture exhibition is a quite compact exhibition at the Urban Cow Studio in Frome Road, Adelaide. The Urban Cow Studio is an eclectic store of handmade art works. A must if you are looking for an original art work or gift. The Studio tends to be completely choc-a-bloc with items, so allow time to view.

The Sturt's Desert Pea exhibition is reached by a steep stair climb to the first floor. The small exhibition room is quite sparse, with white bare walls and a wooden floor. With the size of this exhibition perhaps it would have been better served with other artists included or perhaps at the more modern Jam Factory.

The Sturt's Desert Pea is a South Australian floral emblem and much-loved flower. This exhibition pays homage to this emblem in porcelain sculptures, framed tiles, mosaics and vases, some better realised than others.

The artist Simina Barcau has a flair for ceramics and porcelain. The framed tiles are particularly evocative of the emblem, however, some of the sculptures are less well formed. The vases are a highlight of the exhibition and viewed en masse are very effective. This piece of our native flora seems to lend itself to areas with views to the red dust lands. In the cold winter room at the Urban Cow studio it was curiously out of kilter in the somewhat sterile environment of the exhibition space.

Simina Barcau - Artist
Simina Barcau was diagnosed with brain cancer in January 2015. She found inspiration for the exhibition while driving with her husband through the desert to Coober Pedy. She observed a sea of red next to the road and stopped to have a look. This was the beginning of her fascination with the Sturt's Desert Pea.

The blaze of red that is the Sturt's Desert Pea lends itself to bold art works. This artist has begun to experiment with representations of this beloved emblem. Her artworks are a celebration of this flower and deserve wide recognition.

The Sturt's Desert Pea Porcelain Sculpture exhibition celebrates a most magnificent flower. The exhibition is on display until August 1st.
