Pull up a stool at The Stuffed Beaver and you'll realise this Bondi watering hole is about a whole lot more than just a silly name. Specifically, it's about bringing a little slice of Canada to Bondi Road. It's part sports bar – with the TVs tuned to ESPN – and part diner – with its wooden booths in the back and carbo-heavy North American food on the menu. Packaged all together, it makes for a hell of a good time once the knock-off bell sounds.
Occupying an old shopfront, The Stuffed Beaver is just one skinny room. The bar's up the front and is surrounded by metal bar stools and a couple of tables and chairs hugging the wall. The bar is backed by shelves housing grog and a rather curious selection of books – a John Pilger tome for example – as well as a large TV tuned to sport. Past the bar are a number of wooden booths that make up the back room. There's more TVs out there, with the simple message on the wall that 'the highest tab chooses the channel.'
To drink, there's bottles of Miller, Little Creatures, and longnecks of Melbourne Bitter. There is also a surprisingly good wine list with Sauv Blanc, Shiraz, Merlot and Chardonnay all getting a look in. The cocktail list is similarly solid and rather old school: try a Margarita, Bloody Mary or a Beaver Iced Tea. The J.Lo – a double shot of tequila with ginger beer and wine – is also sure to put you in the mood.
When your stomach starts to rumble, there's Dam Nachos, Dam Burgers, Dam Wings and to follow, Dam Desserts. Or you could try the Poutine, a Canadian favourite consisting of chips with gravy and cheese. Serves are hearty and the food tasty, if not particularly friendly to your waistline.
