A local group of 12 Mornington artists sure are making waves this summer. Dubbed 'The Studio 12' their latest free pop-up exhibition is being held in Mornington until Monday 27th of January.

What started as a small group of friends catching up on a Wednesday night to paint, blossomed into a collaboration of now, a dozen local artists (all living in and around the Mornington Peninsula).

The concept involves regular exhibitions that literally 'pop-up' around the Mornington region and they have been known to hold exhibitions in inner Melbourne metro too (Camberwell was one last year). The lovely aspect of this pop-up style fashion of art showings is that the artists can liaise directly with the public, build their profile and engage with the community.

I met one of the local artists Angela Russo and she told me how the group started (just an informal meeting of like-minded painters), to the creation of this concept and now regular exhibitions to promote their work and provide the public with gorgeous paintings of iconic Victoria cities and coastal regions, still life, portraits and mesmerising architecture.

The groups strengths vary greatly as do their love of topic to paint. Many of their works have been directly commissioned, which is pivotal in keeping this grassroots community alive.

"When a painting is purchased, we replace it straight away. That way the artist continues to paint and sell their work" Angela tells me. "When we exhibit in galleries it can be a 40-50% commission for the gallery and even though it is great for exposure, we're unable to meet the people who buy our paintings and that is the part that means a lot to us."

A primary school teacher, Angela loves being able to devote time to her passion as do the rest of the group - who moonlight in other roles as well. The group consist of award-winning artists, teachers and tutors who compose their work from oils, acrylics, watercolours, pen and water (sketches) and pastels.

The prices range from $50 for small frames upwards to $1,000 for larger canvases and intricate work in frames. I was there on the second day and they had already sold over 8 paintings... and counting. There is something for everyone's price range and taste, with a donation from the artists being made at the end of the exhibition to Biala Peninsula Early Childhood Development.

Entry is free and the artists will be dropping in and out during this time. If you are coming from Melbourne, why not make a day of it?

I left around 10.30am on a sunny 25C Sunday and got there around 11.20am coming from the SE suburbs (love when there's no traffic) and there is ample parking. The venue is just off Main Street, with lots of choices for lunch and beach options weather permitting.
