A playground & flat track for your kids to ride
Stromlo Forest Park is a world class mountain bike riding facility, 15km's south-west of the city. Opened in 2007, the park has various levels of mountain bike trails coming down the mountain which are popular with competitive sportspeople and recreational users of all ages and abilities. Stromlo Forest Park also has Equestrian trails, a cross country running track, an area called The Playground to test your bike riding skills, bushwalking and jogging tracks.

Older kids will enjoy some of the dirt paths and jumps as part of the Bike Path, however there is also a childrens area for preschool aged children to ride and play.Take your kids bike or scooter so they can ride around the flat paths, before a play on the basic playground equipment afterwards. There is also a free BBQ to use, so family members can all meet up again for a BBQ lunch in the playground.

Once they gain some confidence, kids can then move down onto the Criterium Circuit - a flat and open bike riding circuit designed for cyclists to race on. On weekends and school holidays it is also utilised by the kids coming down from the playground - the perfect place for your kids to practice riding their bike or scooter.

The 1.2km circuit is flat with slight hills and at each end.

Underneath the Viewing Platform there are toilets and a few picnic tables to relax and have a break. On our visit on a Sunday, there was one serious cyclist and the rest of the people enjoying the facility were children and adults on bikes and scooters. It is important for the kids to keep left to ensure they don't get in the way of any fast cyclist.
If you are interested in riding on the Criterium Track, check the Stromlo Forest Park website before you go to ensure the track hasn't been booked out for a competition on the day you want to visit.

On the other side of the track is a cross country running track, with kids and adults training for athletic events. At the time of writing, this recreation area is looking to expand with a $33 million dollar pool facility, enclosed oval, sporting grounds and tourist accommodation to be added to the complex. This is all outlined in the Stromlo Forest Park Master Plan, see here for details.

Stromlo Forest Park is an asset to Canberra and can be used by the whole family and the entire community. Kids can start out in the playground and venture onto the Circuit and then in time can advance up to the dirt tracks. If you love bike riding then Stromlo Forest Park will be the number one attraction for the whole family this weekend.
