If you love ice cream (and let's be honest, who doesn't), there's a little family-run ice creamery in the north of Canberra which is like a Willy-Wonka dream of amazing ice cream flavours. Every batch at Stripey Sundae is handmade by the owners and there are flavours kids will be begging to try but most definitely some refined and creative tastes for the adults too.
You never quite know what will be on the delicious blackboard list for the day - the choices range from classics like Belgian chocolate, lemon sorbet and raspberry through to earl grey tea, red skin lollies, coconut lychee, coffee (because coffee plus ice cream is double amazing!) and so many more. There are even special occasion flavours like pfeffernusse at Christmas time and Raiders lime when a certain team makes the finals.
And if you're a vegan or a vegetarian, you don't have to miss out on the fun - there are sorbets, coconut and soy-based ice creams so you can enjoy a dreamy dairy-free dessert. As well as ice creams, you can find hot and cold drinks and toasties on the menu too.
It can be tricky to spot this ice cream gem from the road so keep your eyes peeled for the driveway next door to the Gold Creek Chapel. You should spot a blackboard listing the current flavours which is where the real fun begins... choose your flavours and settle into the cosy little store or pull up a chair on the veranda outside - it even has mist sprayers to keep you super cool in the hot Canberra summer.
As well as the ice creams, there is a smorgasbord of board games (LOTS) to choose from so you can settle in, relax and play to your heart's content. The little ones can settle into the kids' corner so you have a perfect recipe for happiness - ice cream, games and some quality time together. A must-do in summer but the cosy shop is perfect for a sneaky little treat in winter too.
