Hear ye, hear ye ! It's on its way to Melbourne. The stage spectacular, Strictly Ballroom The Musical will arrive in our city in January 2015. Whether you have several left feet or are accomplished at tripping the light fantastic, this show is built to entertain you. The music is fabulous from the opening song and the finale "Love is in the Air" is still as popular as it was in 1977.
The plot takes a light-hearted look at the competitive ballroom dancing scene and emphasises the lengths that some will go to in order to win. There's some great dancing and some humorous acting but at all times, there's the tapping of audience feet.
Underlying the frivolity there are lots of poignant moments and a heart-warming love story. For the audience there's laughter, tears and humour and the endless urge to get up and dance. It's really the story of The Ugly Duckling in ballroom genre.
Having been both a ballroom competitor and a social dancer, I kept being transported back there time and again, however in defence of the competitive scene, there is a whole lot more camaraderie` than that portrayed on the stage.
The costumes are vibrant (and at times very different), the stage sets are exceptional and the story is well delivered by a talented cast. There's a lot of audience-cast interaction throughout the show and as seating is covered in the sparkle colours of the competitors, there is much cheering for favourites and other vocal support from patrons in corresponding coloured seats.
