StreetWork was established by Peter Hobbs OAM over 30 years ago, the seed planted and watered with a belief that one supportive mentor can have a significant impact on "at-risk" youth, helping them to grow and turn their lives around.
Peter recalls, "When I started StreetWork I witnessed a gap in services to youth at risk who in increasing numbers ended up homeless, addicted or in prison... What was needed was support on the ground when young people first showed these signs of disconnection".
As its purpose and mission, StreetWork focuses on providing to at-risk youth the same opportunities as their peers - to grow, to achieve their dreams and to develop as a person with high self-esteem. StreetWork provides one-on-one mentoring to help break the cycle of destructive influences and behaviours and to find strategies to turn the lives of these teens around. Whilst the focus is on StreetWork's mentoring approach, its expertise in case management, committed volunteers and the strategic location of StreetWork branches are also critical to its success and positive outcomes.

As the need has grown, so have StreetWork's branches with locations throughout Sydney's North Shore and Northern Beaches with plans to expand further. One of its newest branches has been established in Hornsby/Ku-ring-gai. Despite its socioeconomic status, the teen population of nearly 30,000 in this area is just as at risk as any other part of Sydney.
As part of the Turramurra Business Forum and to raise awareness and encourage people to get involved, StreetWork is hosting a "meet and mingle" evening in Lindfield and would be delighted for you to come along. It will be a great opportunity for you to learn about StreetWork and also network with local businesses.
